Call for caution over Lancashire council spends

LANCASHIRE County Council will exceed its £719million annual budget by more than £2million if it does not rein back spending now, its Cabinet will be told tomorrow.

County treasurer Gill Kilpatrick has produced a report updating senior councillors on how its finances are going after five months of the financial year.

In the report she said: “The economic context within which the county council operates remains difficult, with significant pressure on public sector spending.

It is vital that the three-year financial strategy remains under review.”

The main reasons for the extra spending are increased costs of special education needs transport, unexpected demand for health and social care services transferred from the NHS, and higher than predicted energy costs for street lighting.
