Canvassers out in Pendle to complete electoral register

CANVASSERS are visiting Pendle households who haven’t yet returned their electoral registration forms.

They will be knocking on the doors of homes for which the council have still to receive forms.

Gillian Turpin, Pendle Council elections and registration manager, said: “The electoral canvass is part of the annual voter registration process.

“We delivered forms to Pendle homes in June, followed by reminders in July.

“The majority of residents have already returned their forms by post or registered by telephone, internet or text message.

“But there are still around 12,000 households we still haven’t heard from.

“It’s these homes that our canvassers will be visiting.”

The canvasser will go through the details on the form and make any required changes.

By law, households have to provide this information to their local council every year. Failure to provide the information could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

lol the council sells this event as "for your vote" but they couldnt give a monkeys about votes. Its all about revenue, and ensuring they scoop every penny by forcing you by law to register for their coffers.

When you consider that there are an estimated 37,000 households in Pendle then the figure of 12,000 - 33% - that haven't yet registered is simply staggering.

The problem is that as a society we do not treasure or nurture democracy. I fear that the mainstream political parties are in thrall to, and have been captured by corporate interests and their endless promotion of consumerism, idolatry to the market and privatisation has done immense damage to the public realm and the very notion of citizenship and civic society.

This process is continuing unabated with Prime Minsiter Cameron's idea of 'The Big Society' acting as a fig leaf of cover for the true aims of his party.
