Chance to 'listen to the past' in Blackburn

UNUSUAL and interesting recordings from the past, preserved in the North West Sound Archive, will be introduced at Livesey Library, in Cherry Tree Lane, Blackburn, on Tuesday, September 18.

Archivist Andrew Schofield will host the ‘Listen To The Past’ event, from 2pm.

The NWSA was founded in 1979, and its purpose is to record, collect, and preserve sound recordings relevant to life in the North West of England.

Housed in Clitheroe Castle, the archive contains more than 110,000 sound-recorded items, and 2.5tonnes of 78-rpm gramophone records, ranging from George Formby to the Halle Orchestra. There are internationally-important collections, including the survey of English dialect, and solidarity speeches from the dockyards of Poland.

It is the largest collection of sound recordings outside London. Admission to the talk is £1 and tickets are available from Livesey library, or call 01254 209442.
