Rawtenstall soldier wins top Army award

A TRAINEE soldier has won a top Army award after being selected by his own comrades.
Kingsman Chris Schofield, 27, a dad-of-four from Rawtenstall, has successfully completed the Combat Infantryman’s Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.
Ahead of joining 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment he was awarded the Soldiers’ Soldier prize.
Kingsman Schofield, who used to work for Curtain Care in Oswaldtwistle, said he was proud to have been handed the honour.
His platoon commander, Captain James Hoy, said: “Kingsman Schofield has been awarded the Soldiers’ Soldier prize.
“This goes to the recruit who his peers think is the best soldier in the platoon, so it is a highly prized award.
“He is a father of four youngsters, so he quickly became known as the platoon dad. He did set a fine example for others to follow, it was no surprise to see such a selfless individual win this particular award.”
Kingsman Schofield, who has children, Izzie-Jay, eight, Tyler, five, Thomas, four and Scarlett, 23 months, will receive his award at the pass out parade ceremony at the Infantry Training Centre on Friday.
Despite thinking about joining the army from an early age, Kingsman Schofield didn’t get around to it until he was 27.
He said: “I suppose I was a bit lazy in some ways, I did a number of boring jobs and raised a family in the meantime – I’ve got four children, two boys and two girls.
“I got to this stage where I thought if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it, and I would be kicking myself for the rest of my life. So I did it.
“The course at Catterick does what it needs to do, it gets you to the right standard. Even though it is hard, it is also enjoyable. I’ve no idea why I got this award, I just did what I thought I was supposed to do. It does feel good though, being the Soldiers’ Soldier.”
Kingsman Schofield lives in Rawtenstall, where his family including parents, David and Carol, and brothers and sisters David, Michael, David, Sarah, Samantha and Daniel live.
His mother Carol said: “We are all very proud.”

What if Chris had wanted to do this all his life and now has the chance to do it? It is not something to be taken lightly and I will guarentee that he would have been informed of this when he went to sign on.
At least he has a job. The £16,000+ a year salary will mean that he can provide for his family and not worry too much about redundancy for the next 4 years.
Would you have said the same thing if the headline had read that he had gone to become a Trawlerman after starting a family?

Chris has put his heart and sole into the last 26 weeks training, and all I can say is he is a credit to the country he is serving.
