Ex-Blackburn nurse to take up role of Bishop of Beverley

A FORMER nurse at a hospital in Blackburn, who was brought up in Darwen, has been appointed Bishop of Beverley.

Canon Glyn Webster, the new bishop for the Northern Province, was an ordination candidate from the Diocese of Blackburn.

When living in Darwen he attended St Peter’s Church and returns to the town frequently.

The Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev. Nicholas Reade, said: “I have known Canon Glyn for many years, and count him as a good friend.

“He is a gentle and caring pastor with real spiritual depth, a wise priest very committed to the Mission of the Church and with a wealth of experience behind him, and a great sense of fun.”

Glyn worked as a nurse at Blackburn Royal Infirmary before training for the ministry at Cranmer Hall, Durham.

After 11 years as vicar of St Luke’s York, and part-time senior chaplain of York District Hospital, he became the full-time chaplain there.

He served as rural dean of the Deanery of York for 10 years.

He was appointed as canon treasurer of York Minster in 2000, and has been canon chancellor there since 2003.

He is currently the acting dean of York Minster and will succeed the Rt Rev Martyn Jarrett who retires on September 30.

Bishop Glyn said: “I am honoured and humbled to have been approached to take on this role as a Suff-ragan Bishop of Beverley at this very crucial time in the church.

“I am passionately com-mitted to the unity of the whole life of the Church of England, never wanting to encourage people to operate as a church within a church. It’s really important to our future life together if we are going to make any impact on this nation of ours with the gospel of Christ that we remain together. I hope to make my contribution in this new role and I look forward to serving with the Archbishop.”

What exactly does a bishop do? I see them wandering about in fancy garments at big occasions and make a speech here and there. But what do they actually achieve?
Nice work if you can get it.
