Farewell service for Bacup's last CofE church
10:00pm Monday 20th August 2012 in News
BACUP’S last CofE church is to close after a final service of celebration and thanksgiving next Sunday.
The service at Christ Church at 3pm will be led by the Rt Rev Christopher Edmondson, Bishop of Bolton and members of the congregation, past and present, will take part.
The decision to close the 157-year-old church was taken by church commissioners in March.
From the end of this month, the congregation will join with that of Bacup’s Central Methodist Church on Burnley Road. The first service for Christ Church to be held at Central’s building will be on September 2 at 10.30am.
A spokesman for Christ Church said: “We are keen to develop further the already strong ecumenical links that exist in the town. The congregation is encouraged that even at this early stage of the partnership, families have approached us for baptisms.”
