Police quiz Burnley woman, 39, over flat death puzzle

DETECTIVES are investigating after a 41-year-old man was found dead at a flat in Burnley.

Police were alerted by paramedics after the unnamed man was discovered at a first-floor property in Brownhill Avenue at around 7.15pm on Wednesday.

Detectives have questioned a 39-year-old woman, who is believed to be the flat’s tenant, on suspicion of assault.

A Lancashire Police spokesman confirmed last night that a post-mortem examination by a Home Office pathologist had proved inconclusive.

Further toxicology tests are now set to be conducted before the cause of the man’s death can be established.

One neighbour said the man was believed to be a regular visitor to the flat and the female tenant had not lived there for more than a few months.

Neighbour Rosalind Graham, 69, said: “There was a lot going on — there were ambulances and police all over the place. No-one really knows what happened.

“This used to be such a quiet area.

“A lot of the flats were built for older people but they moved out when the stairs became too much for them and younger people moved in.”

Crime scene investigators visited the flat several times yesterday and two police community support officers remained posted outside the communal entrance.

Anyone with any information regarding the death is asked to contact the investigation team, led by Det Supt Ian Critchley, on 101.
