Accolade for Darwen town centre heritage plan

A SCHEME to help regenerate historic buildings in Darwen Town Centre has received a prestigious award from the Royal Town Planning Institute.

The £2.5m Darwen town centre townscape heritage initiative received the ‘Commendation for town centre regeneration and conservation’ after helping to restore over 25 historic buildings and make major improvements to the town’s market square.

The five-year programme, which began in 2006, received £2m funding from Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Heritage Lottery Fund, and a further £562,750 of private investment.

Buildings such as Holker House, the former Burton building Market Street Pharmacy, 3 Foundry Street, 25 Railway Road/2-4 Knott Street, the former tram shelter waiting rooms on the A666, the former Belgrave Chapel and several buildings on Bolton Road were all renovated as part of the initiative.

When will dareners ever learn?
Still if it's the best they can come up with cleaning stinky old buildings because they have not got the foresight to do any better then i suppose they will be happy to pat each other on head.

Bless the banner carriers!

Blake's poem:

And did those feet in ancient time.
Walk upon England’s mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England’s pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England’s green & pleasant Land

Reminds me of The Labour Party before Tony Blair got his hands on it, English rose 1!

I have to agree english rose 1. Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher were indeed extraordinary PM's. Both Conservatives but only one admitted it!

We really do need a credible Labour Party opposition back again. Not Tony Blair‘s New Labour hangers on where mistaken old party loyalty is their only saviour!

At least our town centre 'looks the business', is an attractive place to be, and has a brilliant thriving market.
Unlike Burnley!
What have you got? A run down town centre, half empty market and a run down station that is called 'Burnley Central' but is far from it! Oh sorry, forgot, you have the Weavers Triangle', and what exactly is that? Do remind me?

Good humour doesn't diminish with time - for example, some of Oscar Wilde's quotes are still held in great regard.

What makes you think the market in Burnley is 'half empty'? You obviously haven't been. The town centre is no different to other small towns in Lancashire - a mix of horrible 1960s / 70s concrete, historic buildings (Mechanics, Town Hall, Court Buildings, Police Station etc) and more modern stuff. BUrnley also has some of the best countryside in East Lancashire and is packed full of green spaces and trees. I know it's an ordeal for you Darreners to actually leave your town, but you really ought to get out more and experience better places - it will broaden your horizons.

Why are there so many people who post on this site seemingly for no other reason than to poke moronic insults at local towns and their residents?

The sad fact is, that most or all E Lancs towns have become run-down during the past 40-50 years.

If davidinburnley, as he claims, has been to Darwen and actually taken the trouble to look around, he would have noticed all those things. There may not be as many of them as you'd see in Burnley, or Blackburn, perhaps, but that's mainly a factor of the relative sizes of the places.

I'm sure that if we compared the crime statistics for, say, Darwen and Burnley, we'd find far higher numbers of assaults, sex offences, child abuse, drug abuse,. money laundering, and many other such in Burnley. We don't hear him boasting about that, do we?

We know all about the countryside thankyou! About 2/3rds of the area inside our modern boundary consists of open space; wouldn't surprise me if Darwen had more of it than Burnley.

"My town is better than your town, your town is worse that our town, you are inbred, they are inbred..." YAWN, YAWN, YAWN bore off you unfunny numpties, nobody is intersted in your favourite politicians either, they are all equally bent.

I think the heritage plan has contributed positively to the town centre, it's just a shame that it can't be executed more through other aspects of the CBD. It's a good start though, well done to all involved.

The council needs to focus on what would improve the town centre now, not necessary by throwing money around, but intelligently monitoring what businesses are opening up and how these business must comply to make the town look and function better.
