Hopes and fears for Barrowford village show
3:00pm Friday 10th August 2012 in News
PLANS for Barrowford’s annual show later this month are continuing despite fears it could be the village’s last.
The organising committee recently released a statement vowing that ‘the show must go on’ but said the future of the annual celebration, which has been held for 85 years, was in doubt.
The statement said: “Through this recession the show has been hit hard and funding is at its lowest, if more funding and sponsors cannot be found this could be Barrowford Show’s last year.”
Wet weather has also hit attendances at Barrowford Park in recent years, so organisers are hoping for a sunny day on Sunday, August 26.
Marina Parente, one of the organisers, said the show had received some sponsorship help recently but more was needed.
She said: “Some of the local businesses I’ve spoken to have cut back their sponsorship. Several have told me they are doing something Olympic themed this year instead. We have some great support though. Our main sponsors are H Rigg, and acdc, both Barrowford companies which are being really supportive.
“Booths and Farmhouse Biscuits are also supporting the show and this year we have a new lady president, Michelle Berkins of Michelle B, which we are very pleased about.
“We’re confident this year’s show will be a big success and enjoyable for all. We just need the sun to shine.”
This year’s main attractions are Accrington Pipe Band, Tricks for Treats dog show and Vander Bros, an aerial stunt act.
There will also be vinatge cars, a baby show and competitions such as Tug o’ War. The traditional theme will continue with Nelson Brass Band playing at 1pm and 3pm.
