Darwen paddling pond set to return to its former glory

POND Thepaddling pond needs to be cleaned POND Thepaddling pond needs to be cleaned

SILT in Darwen’s Sunnyhurst Wood paddling pond could finally be cleared.

An application has been submitted to remove the material that has left the water contaminated.

Experts are now needed to maintain the pond by using a mini excavator to scrape away the silt and dispose of it safely.

Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood chairman Dennis Gillibrand is hoping that the council will approve the application following complaints.

He said: “People are complaining about the state of the water and it looks a mess.

“The paddling pool had been clean for the past 100 years and people could once enjoy paddling in it.

“This mess has been going on for more than two years and it needs sorting.”

Over the years the Friends of Sunnyhurst Wood have put £80,000 into the maintenance of the 85-acre wood.

But now the decision from Darwen Town Council Park’s Committee will determine the future of the pond.

In total £6,000 is needed to carry out the work.

Mr Gillibrand said: “Money from the park’s committee can be allocated to parks across the town including Bold Venture, Whitehall, Sunnyhurst and Ashton Park and following a unanimous vote, it’s clear that the paddling pond needs the money.

“We have waited long enough and the state of it causes concern.”

Sunnyhurst ward councillor Dave Smith has arranged a meeting with the Friend’s of Sunnyhurst Wood for August 23 to discuss the application.

Damage was also caused to drains and paths in June after heavy floods.

How about getting the people who have been recently convicted of damage and vandalism to Darwen Tower to do the cleaning up ?
Plus ask anyone who is currently "on the sick" to do some community work.

Are you worried you may be asked to help?

Do the people who want the vandals and so called "Dole Dossers" actually know what this works entails? How many of these people have been trained and are licenced to operate an excavator and how many have the neccessary licence to dispose of the silt. It's not a case of putting on wellies and jumping in with a bucket and spade. If you understood what the job entails and the regulations involved you wouldn't be making rash comments. The money from the parks fund was set aside to do these kinds of improvements, so it will be money well spent.

Why not?
It was built by men with buckets and spades!
Forget the regs!

lol. am thinking anyone currently "on the sick" is on it for a reason. cant quite see uncle dan clearing out. His radiation treatment makes him feel really rough. My neighbour down the street is waiting for a new hip. please do not presume all on the sick are swinging it. On the other hand what about mothers with children over the age of 4 on benefits. They already proof that they are healthy as they do not have much to do other than to keep reproducing. might even give them something else to think about than their next claim for child benefit.

H&S palava - like 'Darener' says, buckets and spades. They can empty the silt into skips or whatever, and let the 'experienced, trained council staff' take care of the disposal. Welfare to work, its the only way to get this country moving and get the lazy dossers (NOT the genuinely sick!) off their bone idle arses, instead of them sitting at home, Sky TV on, Fags and Special Brew in hand, waiting for the next dole cheque!
