MP's praise for work to tackle illegal Oswaldtwistle waste site

AN MP has praised the ‘behind the scenes work’ of a council to tackle an illegal waste site.

MP Graham Jones said a vast amount of planning from Hyndburn Council had been required in order to help other agencies remove waste responsibly from the Nook Lane site in Oswaldtwistle.

Mr Jones spoke after visiting the site with Environment Agency officers leading the investigation to access the scale of the problem.

He said: “The Environment Agency have been liaising on a regular basis with Hyndburn Council, as the planning authority, and Lancashire County Council planning officers, as the waste sites authority, to consider remediation options for the existing contamination at the site.

“Hyndburn leader Miles Parkinson visited the site and explained that through their planning department an agreement had been reached for the movement of contaminated material with Blakeys, the originator of the waste, and to begin transferring it to Whinney Hill.”

Well Mr Jones you obviously are not listening to your constituents. Hyndburn Borough Council planning department and licensing have been shown up to be completely incompetent in this and a number of issues, which clown in the licensing department granted the licenses to dump this rubbish? Which body granted panning permission to the travellers to build the "stables" on Moss Lane? Which body has failed consistently to regulate the illegal behaviour of both the gypsy's of Moss Lane and the Blakeys and owners of the old Cocker chemical site? The answer is Hyndburn Borough Council and Lancashire County Council. Both bodies with which you have a cosy affiliation. Both bodies are about as dynamic as slugs and if you are happy with the way Mr Parkinson has supervised both debacles then in my opinion you are as much use as the tins of fly spray I have been wasting my money on over the past few weeks!

All praise goes to June Smith and the Ossy community that stood strong and stood beside her. The Council's gave their blessing and granted licenses which were no doubt paid for in the present and in the the past, no doubt, for this GROSS NEGLIGENCE. Give over Mr. MP and get your facts straight please. Please put the checks and balances in place so this environ"mental" catastrophe does not continue and WILL NOT BE A REPEAT PERFORMANCE IN FUTURE. Acknowledging the war chemicals unleashed in land water air and community would be a great start sir.

Think the praise should be for the firefighters who had to go in and put the fire out after the mysterious arson attack on it, not that it was dodgy illegal waste or anything!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree twicki... praise the firefighters first and foremost and.. june next... she was trying to get this problem of removing known already evicted from wigan household rubbish sorted out long before the fire even began as to avoid any further risk of public health - an ounce of prevention and whatnot worth a pound of cure. the firemen had been on site previous as I suspect they wanted to assess any problems with self combustion as there simply was so much of it - 50,000 tonnes without any escapeways for the methane gas created from rot... my two cents
