RED Cross chiefs have selected two students from Pendle to take part in a humantarian aid mission to Eastern Europe.

Fledgling medic Harriet Sinclair and emerging scientist Amelia Cockell will jet out to Macedonia for a five-day camp focusing on how the international charity operates in conflicts.

Picked out of hundreds of candidates, Harriet and Amelia became involved with the Red Cross while studying at Nelson and Colne College.

The pair will stay in the Macedonian town of Struga, from September 6, while undertaking workshops in international humanitarian law.

Before their trip, they have already become well-versed in refugee issues, HIV and AIDS awareness, first aid, offering emotional support Each of the duo has ambitions to make it in the medical world – Harriet is looking to study medicine and Amelia, 16, who went to Fisher More High in Colne, is opting for forensic or biomedical science.

Part of their college studies saw them enrol in Nelson and Colne’s pre-med programme, which offers specific guidance for those seeking a medical career.

Harriet, 17, who formerly attended Colne Primet High, said: “I’m really looking forward to Macedonia, especially with work abroad being so difficult to gain for anyone under 18. Being one of the two students selected from the Red Cross Society in Britain is amazing.

“We will get the opportunity to work alongside students and teachers from across the globe, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the Red Cross and local communities promote humanitarianism and are resilient to global injustices.” A Nelson and College spokesman added: “Volunteer work is a fantastic opportunity for young people, because not only does it broaden their horizons, giving them a fresh view on the world, but it also looks fantastic on their CV, making them stand out from the crowd when applying for university or jobs.”
