£595k roadworks on A56 in Rossendale

MOTORISTS heading south from Rossendale will have to endure six weeks of night-time roadworks starting this month.

A £585,000 Highways Agency maintenance programme along the A56 will get underway on August 17 and is due to be completed by September 30.

The scheme promises to repair potholes and upgrade marking along the nine-mile stretch, which links the M65 at Accrington and the M66 near Bury.

Work will be carried out in phases along different sections of both carriageways of the route, and also includes a renewal of road studs and some lighting.

The project will take place between 10pm and 5am on weekdays and 10pm to 7am on weekends.

It includes: • Two nights of repairs and surface treatment to improve skid resistance along the slip roads at the A681 Rawtenstall roundabout.

• A second two night phase for repairs and surface treatment to improve skid resistance on the southbound access slip onto the A56 from Haslingden (Grane Road ) • Eight overnight closures for work over five miles of the southbound A56 between the A680 at Helmshore and the start of the M66 near Edenfield north of Bury.

• Five overnight closures of the southbound carriageway for around 3.5 miles between its junction with the A679 Burnley Road and Rising Bridge roundabout, and another five nights of work between the same junctions on the northbound carraigeway.

Highways Agency project sponsor Jakub Malaj said: “The work will extend the life of the carriageway and provide smoother, safer conditions for road users by repairing potholes and improving visibility, road markings and skid resistance.

Traffic flow along the A56 is very light overnight and we are not anticipating significant delays to people’s journeys but we encourage drivers to plan journeys, leave a little extra time if they are travelling overnight and to heed diversion advice.”
