Free school on track to open in Blackburn
8:00pm Saturday 21st July 2012 in News
THE first ‘free’ primary school in East Lancashire is now officially on track to open in Blackburn next year.
The application from Tauheedul Free Schools’ Trust to open The Olive School, mainly for muslim boys and girls, has been approved by education secretary Michael Gove.
It will start with 90 pupils in September next year building up to an eventual 630 primary aged children.
Iniitially it expected to be located on the site of the current Tauheedul Islam Girls High School in Bicknell Street when that college moves to the premises of the old Beardwood Humanities College in Preston New Road.
This would put it next to the new Tauheedul Islamic Boys High School - approved last year for free school status - which open this September to provide education for 700 11 to 16-year-olds.
Both will fall outside the education authority’s powers and will be in charge of their own admissions.
The approval means Tauheedul will provide education from reception to sixth form.
The girls schools head and chief executive Mufti Hamid Patel said: “This is great news for the young people in Blackburn and their parents who have campaigned for the school.
“The town is desperately short of places for primary age children, some of whom are currently having to travel long distances.
“It is absolutely on track to open in September 2013 with a reception and year one class. Everyone is excited by this. The demand for the school has been huge.
“We will be starting with 90 pupils in reception and year 1 and numbers will build up year on year.
“At the heart of the Tauheedul vision is the determination to impact positively on young lives by providing high academic standards and a programme of personal development to nurture qualities such as leadership and enterprise.
“As a progressive faith school, The Olive School will promote traditional British values and will welcome applications from families of all faiths and none.”
Councillor Tony Humphrys, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for schools, said: “The council is not involved in the establishment or approval of free schools. Now that the school has been given the go-ahead I hope that they will work in partnership with other schools and the local authority.”

This is excellent news for Blackburn.
Tauheedul should take over the management of all primary schools in Blackburn. Just google St Stephens and you will understand why I say what I say. Good luck to Michael Gove for approving this. Well done Tauheedul.
Blackburn is proud of you.

What does 'mainly Muslim' mean? 99% or 51%? Or is it a delibrate attempt to 'whip up' anti-Muslim hysteria when under the Free Schools policy, 50% of admissions is non-faith based.
Nevertheless, congratulations to LET for not having comments from the NUT's self appointed anti-change rep Simon Jones.

Looks like those who have not benefited from a good education want others to be deprived as well.
Tauheedul has done excellent work and although the local council has not give it due recognition, nor has LET, but the government and the majority of the people of Blackburn have. So has the national media, so well done to the guys at Tauheedul.
Just look at their work with Blakewater College which the Council left in a mess.

Unfortunately LET fails it's readers again by not highlighting the positive contributions tauheedul has made towards other schools namely blakewater college and saving hawthornes from becoming an academy, bailing LA out when no other high school offered its support!!!
Tauheedul modestly gets on with it's business which is to serve the community at large directly and indirectly in a voluntary capacity..... I was sceptical about tauheedul hence researched them. Its a Shame that our LA and family of schools don't all have the same drive and ambitions as tauheedul.
Tauheedul was given birth the day our family of schools starting failing our communities!!!
Like it or not we are responsible for tauheeduls existence.

Graham makes some excellent points, both in his analysis of why faith schools tend to be more successful - it's not exactly clear why! - but also his warning against linking the shocking events at one Islamic institution and what might or might not happen at an Islamic school which falls under the broad umbrella of state education. The physical and emotional abuse of young people is barbaric, and it is for this reason that moves by Tauheedul and other Islamic groups into the public sphere are to be welcomed, for at a stroke they become more accountable, more transparent, not less. Sadly, private institutions are not as rigorously inspected as public ones.
There is another story behind this though. For this shocking tale to have become public at all shows that things are moving on in terms of the Muslim community's resolve to put an end to these outmoded ways of treating young people, for it can only have entered the public domain because some members of the Muslim community have wanted it to be made public. Young people know their rights, parents too, and rightly so. In the past this kind of abuse would have been dealt with behind closed doors, if at all, but its exposure is evidence of an important shift in thinking, and is to be welcomed. And let us not delude ourselves into thinking that such abuse has only occurred in Islamic institutions in our country - friends of mine who attended secular, public schools in the sixties and seventies will tell you otherwise.
We should however try to put to bed once and for all this spurious link between Tauheedul and the Wahhabi faith, indeed any 'dodgy' link between the school and Saudi Arabia. The school may have been visited by people from that country, or had visiting speakers, but looking back over the past few years I read that Jack Straw has also been there on a few occasions; does that imply a secret link with the Labour Party?!?!?! What Tauheedul is doing is light years away from what appears to be a traditional Saudi approach to the position of women. The school has a student council, like all the other schools in Blackburn; getting young women to vote on things from an early age doesn't seem terribly Wahhabi-like to me!
Yes, the Tauheedul project is clearly expanding, but if it wasn't doing the core business of getting good results for Blackburn's young people very well, then it would have fallen apart years ago. Its work with Blakewater is particularly heartening; a secular school working hand-in-hand with a local partner, with tangible benefits for all concerned.
The conspiracy theorists of course see this as a further example of a move towards global dominance of the Islamic faith, starting in Blackburn of course. May I respond to this paranoia with two points; firstly, the Muslim community of the UK is still massively under-represented in the higher echelons of power, both political and corporate, the old guard still look after themselves very nicely, and instead of moaning some people want to take them on and compete with them, starting with a good education. Secondly, if you're worried about who is on top in the battle for ideas, events in the Middle East indicate that the traditional model of authority in that part of the world has taken a seismic shift towards a western model. The world is not standing still, and communities everywhere have had enough of being told that they can only have low aspirations, and that they need to know their place in society. Truly meritocratic societies need a bedrock of educational excellence, and that is what Tauheedul if offering. The north-west is in desperate need of smart, educated, and ambitious young people, and if the small number of ex-Tauheedul students I've met are anything to go by, the future's looking a little better already.

For a religion that promotes peace, they sure do go about it in a funny way….
I am wondering why it's not feasible to ask if the mosques are contributing to the segregation of this town? Tauheedal school is connected to the mosque and it is the Islamic teachings of that branch of islam which is promoted within the school. Don’t forget that the school was pulled up in an inspection a number of years ago for not teaching a number of subjects which could be deemed as un-islamic.
We both know that ignorance of other cultures can generate mistrust yet if a child is educated from primary school to year 11 without sustained contact with the indigenous community, then it can be argued that they will be little communication thereafter.
Also, don’t forget that the Channel 4 documentary showed a number of mosques promoting negative aspects of western culture. Surely this isn’t paranoia if a few million people watched it on TV?
Finally. I can’t speak for all the people that have fled from areas with asian populations, but I’d say that the link between high unemployment, worsening schools (where ESOL is a factor), race crime, different cultures and the increase in poverty are contributing factors. The influx of penniless immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh has left it’s mark and you have to ask “would I live in a cess pit if I don’t have to”?

“I have always held the religion of Muhammad in high estimation because of its wonderful vitality. It is the only religion which appears to me to possess that assimilating capacity to the changing phase of existence which can make itself appeal to every age. I have studied him – the wonderful man and in my opinion far from being an anti-Christ, he must be called the Savior of Humanity.”
Tolerance in Britain is an illusion. The problem isn't immigrants not adapting to British culture, it's Brits showing much disrespect and scorn to those who are of any immigrant background. even if an immigrant was well versed in English, knew the customs etc. would they still get employment? No. Would Brits treat them as a decent human? No.
So why would they want to assimilate into a culture that is constantly tearing them down?
As far As English language is concerned, nobody is denying its value and focus should be on helping people learning English. Migrant community believes that an English language skill is key to ensuring equal access to services, opportunities and personal independence. The economic and social survival of bilingual Muslim community depends on English language but not at the cost of its mother tongue. It is a crime against humanity to deprive a community from its native tongue and cultural heritage. Muslim community is bilingual and does not believe in becoming monolingual Brits.
Bilingual Muslims children have a right, as much as any other faith group, to be taught their culture, languages and faith alongside a mainstream curriculum. More faith schools will be opened under sweeping reforms of the education system in England. There is a dire need for the growth of state funded Muslim schools to meet the growing needs and demands of the Muslim parents and children. Now the time has come that parents and community should take over the running of their local schools. Parent-run schools will give the diversity, the choice and the competition that the wealthy have in the private sector. Parents can perform a better job than the Local Authority because parents have a genuine vested interest. The Local Authority simply cannot be trusted.
The British Government is planning to make it easier to schools to “opt out” from the Local Authorities. Muslim children in state schools feel isolated and confused about who they are. This can cause dissatisfaction and lead them into criminality, and the lack of a true understanding of Islam can ultimately make them more susceptible to the teachings of fundamentalists like Christians during the middle ages and Jews in recent times in Palestine. Fundamentalism is nothing to do with Islam and Muslim; you are either a Muslim or a non-Muslim.
There are hundreds of state primary and secondary schools where Muslim pupils are in majority. In my opinion all such schools may be opted out to become Muslim Academies. This mean the Muslim children will get a decent education. Muslim schools turned out balanced citizens, more tolerant of others and less likely to succumb to criminality or extremism. Muslim schools give young people confidence in who they are and an understanding of Islam’s teaching of tolerance and respect which prepares them for a positive and fulfilling role in society. Muslim schools are attractive to Muslim parents because they have better discipline and teaching Islamic values. Children like discipline, structure and boundaries. Bilingual Muslim children need Bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods, who understand their needs and demands.
None of the British Muslims convicted following the riots in Bradford and Oldham in 2001 or any of those linked to the London bombings had been to Islamic schools. An American Think Tank studied the educational back ground of 300 Jihadists; none of them were educated in Pakistani Madrasas. They were all Western educated by non-Muslim teachers. Bilingual Muslim children need bilingual Muslim teachers as role models. A Cambridge University study found that single-sex classes could make a big difference for boys. They perform better in single-sex classes. The research is promising because male students in the study saw noticeable gains in the grades. The study confirms the Islamic notion that academic achievement is better in single-sex classes.

Regardless of it being the best school in Blackburn- it is still in one of the poorest areas in the borough. Most high Asian areas are poor and this is partly because of the reasons I stated previously.

Paranoia (adjective: paranoid ) is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself (e.g. "todays world is being shaped by Islam..at the end of an AK47). Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia.

What does it say about what adults think about the Asian community if they are neither 'encouraged to be good at sport' or 'developed academically'? Obviously it makes sense for the asian community to find a solution to the problem but do you think having hundreds of children seperated from the white peers (physically, spiritually and socially) a suitable solution? Would it not be better to adapt to the place you are in?
Again, do you think that there are stronger links between black and white communities because they have similar social activities and interests as the white population?

If we compare this to a greater social scope we can discuss things like music and film.
Now, I’ve heard of the Asian dub foundation and a chap called Jimmi Minstry or summat but compared to the number of African heritage media personalities, it’s astronomical.
We also see a far greater mix of inter-racial marriages between the white and black communities.
Opportunity…. Something that will not happen with faith based schools, especially those that follow a strict religion.

Faith schools offer both discipline and compassion along with excellent teaching. Actually, faith schools uphold good morals, and the morals of our society have gone downhill since we removed Christian influence from our schools. The point is that faith schools uphold good morals where, especially these days, non-faith schools don't. For most of society, anything goes. Just look at the number of pre-teens having sex. It is the secular atheistic society that has brought this about.
Are there any examples of Muslim schools accepting a majority of Christian students? Christians tend to reject Muslim education, Muslims don't tend to reject Christian education. That's because Muslims accept the Christian scriptures, whilst Christians don't accept the Muslim scriptures. A similar situation exists between Jews and Christians. It's not symmetrical.

Somalia
Since the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991 there has been no central government control over most of the country's territory. The internationally recognized Transitional Federal Government controls only a small part of the country. Somalia has been characterized as a failed state and is one of the poorest and most violent states in the world.
Since 1991, no central government has controlled the entirety of the country, despite several attempts to establish a unified central government. The northwestern part of the country has been relatively stable under the self-declared, but unrecognized, sovereign state of Somaliland. The self-governing region of Puntland covers the northeast of the country. It declares itself to be autonomous, but not independent from Somalia. The Islamist Al-Shabaab controls a large part of the south of the country. Without a central government, Somalia's inhabitants subsequently reverted to local forms of conflict resolution, either civil, Islamic, or customary law.
So.... Even though Islam has had a great part of Somali society for more than 1400 years, (and nealy all Somalis are muslim) it is a failed state and is one of the poorest and most violent states in the world.
yet you claim that it is the absense of religion for our moral decline?

A recent BBC report looking into racism in schools found nearly 88,000 racist incidents took place in UK schools over a four year period. However, the coalition government have removed the duty of schools to report all racist incidents. The report also showed a rise in Islamaphobia in the classroom.
In 2007 the then Labour government said schools in England and Wales must monitor and report all racist incidents following the enquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence. But the present Conservative led government have removed this rule and subsequently fewer incident have been reported.
In a BBC article Sarah Soyei from Show Racism the Red Card (SRRC), said:
“We are seeing a real increase in racism in some areas which is down to factors like a growth of Islamaphobia in society which is filtering into classrooms,”
What’s more in many cases teachers would not be told of a racist incident due to the victim feeling intimidated and the fear of repercussions, as well as teachers not recognising racist bullying. Ms Soyei adds in the article:
“Racism is a very real issue in many classrooms around the country, but cases of racist bullying are notoriously underreported.
Recently launched TELL MAMA (MEASURING ANTI-MUSLIM ATTACKS) project, was set up to record reported crimes specific to the Muslim community enabling the project to support the victims of anti-Muslim incidents and hate crimes.
Fiyaz Mughal (OBE) from Tell MAMA commenting on the report said:
“This report by the BBC confirms what we are picking up in the TELL MAMA project that school environments are places where hate incidents can and do take place. Whilst the project has just been launched, we are picking up cases where Muslim women have been abused because they are identifiable as Muslims, either because they wear the Hijab or the Niqab and some of them fear going to schools to drop their children off. This is a situation where no parent should find themselves within.”
But Unions and anti-racism charities believe the governments relaxed approach to the reporting of racist bullying is a big mistake.
Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said:
“It is not just a box ticking exercise, we absolutely do need recording and reporting of all racist incidents,”
The Department of Education believe it is teachers and parents who need to deal with racism in schools. But without recorded incidents it is quite easy to overlook the problem and subsequently make racist attacks easier to get away with.

Do you know that more than 3.5million soldiers from the Asian subcontinent fought for Britain in the two World War conflicts, with tens of thousands killed in action?
Do you know that 2.5million men and women who came over from India and Pakistan to do their bit in World War II, became the biggest volunteer force in history?
Did you know that from the 2.5million in WW2, 36,092 were killed, 64,354 were wounded and almost 80,000 were taken prisoner.
Did you know that from the 1million that took part in WW1, More than 47,000 died and 65,000 were wounded.
I hope you can see from these figures how much they have sacrificed to keep Britain British, and not Nazi, and that they have as much right to do what they want as what Christians and Jews have been doing for centuries in the UK.

I feel the media machine has stereotyped Muslim schools as non-cohesive and extremist, the truth of the matter is they are no different to any other school; sorry, the only difference being that majority excel in academic achievement…is that a bad thing?
British society and British education system is the home of institutional racism. That is a fact. The solution is that each and every community should have their own state funded schools with their own teachers. Muslim children suffer more than others. They need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods.
Muslim schools fight against open discrimination, extremist and agressive atheist and secularist ideas that are now infringing upon our fundamental human rights. A form of social engineering not disimilar to the failed idealogy of communism. LEAs are unable to reconcile diversity and inclusion. They are implementing policies that effectively create confusion, ambiguity and can be abused to prevent any new community service that promotes and celebrates diversity. Muslim schools are attempting to make a stand on behalf of all those who believe that we have the right to choose how to educate our children.
There are hundreds of state and church schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be opted out as Muslim Academies.
There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school. Bilingual Muslim children need bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods.
Demand for Islamic education in England is growing fast and schools – official and unofficial – are springing up to meet it. Now some local authorities are concerned that there is insufficient regulation. Although the number of Islamic schools is still small – around 168 at the latest count, just 12 of them state-funded – it is growing fast. About 60 of these schools have opened in the last 10 years; several in the last couple of months. And the demand from parents seems to be huge – one school in Birmingham recently attracted 1,500 applications for just 60 places. At least five Islamic schools have recently applied to be free schools, although so far only one has been approved. Islam promotes seeking knowledge as a form of worship, and things like "memorising the Quran" are rewardable. That makes memorising anything else look easy. Muslims live up to a certain strict code which parents enforce on their children, thereby making them adhere to their schoolwork more than their non-religious counterparts. Islam puts a massive emphasis on education and its essentially part of the religion itself since its Sunnah (following in the manners of the Prophet (pbuh)) but also a lot of the pupils will be from ethnic minority families and stereotypes aside it’s no secret that they encourage their children to excel in their exams and what not.
Muslim schools Performance Table published in the Muslim News (March 30). I have not seen this published anywhere. We keep on reading in the other media that Muslim children and schools do not do well. But according to the GCSE Table, Muslims schools achieve better than the national average, in English and Maths. We should be celebrating such achievements. We don’t hear this from our leaders at all. All credits to the teachers and head teachers in Muslim schools for helping Muslim pupils achieve good results.
Anti Islam propoganda in the Western media for the past 20 years, which accellerated after the 911, is having the opposite effect. Some educated people in the West mainly out of curiosity want to learn what Islam is about. When they approach their research with an open mind, probably most of them form positive impressions about Islam and some of whom rightfully convert. In the USA after the events of 911, convertions to Islam pheonominally increased maily in amongst the educated white community and a large majority of them were females.
