Plans to cut Oswaldtwistle speed limit welcomed

PROPOSALS to reduce speeds on a throughfare in Hyndburn have been welcomed by a county councillor.

Lancashire County Council are considering proposals to introduce a 20mph speed limit in the Hargreaves Road area of Oswaldtwistle.

Procedures to implement a consultation are currently being arranged for the county scheme which would remove exisiting 30mph limits.

Streets affected include Brookside Lane, Brookside Street, Eagle Street, Green Street, King Edward Street and Lancaster Street. County councillor Peter Britcliffe was very pleased to hear the news about reducing the speed limit.

County Coun Britcliffe said: “It is great to hear that traffic speed is to be restricted in this area.

“There have been problems in this area for many years.”

Sledge hammer to crack imaginary nut. How many accidents on this road? I am afraid the blanket 20mph speed limit is unwarranted in most places in this area.

County Councillor Peter Britcliffe wants to try crossing Harvey Street after dark if he thinks the Hargreaves Road area is dangerous ! Some lunatic on a motorbike and another guy in a Subaru think its Santa Pod most nights!

Most drivers are law abiding and drive sensibly. Those that aren't will carry on as they like as there is little police presence on the roads on the lookout for them. Speed cameras are a joke. They might catch some going slightly over the limit but driving safely but not the idiots who slow down for a few yards and then put their foot down. No speed limit of any kind will affect them. Drive a few miles and you'll see several speeders/dangerous drivers/ vehicles infringing the law but as I've said the likelihood of being stopped is low! I'm amazed there aren't many more accidents.
