BURNLEY RES 3, TRANMERE RES 1

BURNLEY reserves tonight secured runners up spot in the Central League West Division thanks to a comfortable win over Tranmere Rovers reserves at Turf Moor.

The Clarets leapfrogged the Wirral outfit into second spot thanks to first-half goals from Joe Jackson and Wes Fletcher, and an early second half striker from trialist Chris Clements.

Cole Stockton pulled a goal back for the visitors with 20 minutes to go, but Burnley had already done more than enough to secure the win.

Mehdi Lazaar had a hand in all three goals, first cutting back for Jackson from the byeline in a one-sided first half.

The ball got trapped between the forward's feet, but he managed to free it quickly enough to stab home from close range in the 22nd minute.

Four minutes before the break Lazaar set up Fletcher to double Burnley's lead with a low shot into the bottom corner, beating former team-mate Ben Woodhead, who was on trial with Tranmere.

The Clarets put the game to bed in the first minute of the second half after Lazaar slipped a ball through for Chris Clements – one of four trialists in the starting line-up, with Daniel Flores coming off the bench to join Paul Jetta, Cheyenne Dunkley and goalkeeper Nick Liversedge all trying to impress.

Clements finished well from 12 yards to give Burnley a 3-0 lead.

Cole Stockton had a deflected shot stopped by Liversedge, who did well to stay upright for as long as possible to make the save.

But the keeper was eventually beaten by Stockton's chip.

Burnley reserves round off their campaign with the visit of Macclesfield reserves on Friday, kick-off 7pm at Turf Moor.
