THE Olympic Games have been described as the greatest show on earth.

Billions of taxpayers' money has been spent on the 2012 Games, including the new showpiece stadium in London.

But organisers have scored an own goal by charging torch bearers £240 to keep their own torch.

Games bosses have justified their actions by saying it costs £495 to produce a torch.

But this is nothing compared to the thousands of pounds raised by these community champions who have shown generosity, selflessness and dedication over the years.

It is scandalous that fundraising star Caitlin Jones, who is only 16, is now having to raise the money herself after she has raised more than £20,000 in memory of her father who died from lung cancer.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones said commercialism had tarnished the Olympic spirit.

Our torch bearer must not miss out on the chance to own the ultimate souvenir of the relay as it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Games bosses must now make sure the money is put to good use as part of the lasting legacy for future generations.
