THE mayor of Darwen Town Council said he was delighted with the response from people after making a plea for information about vandalism attacks in the town.

The council is offering £500 rewards for information leading to a prosecution after the new dome on Darwen Tower and a grave at Darwen cemetery were vandalised.

The tower dome had only been in place for two months, having been made by apprentice engineers at Darwen metal fabricators WEC. The previous dome had blown off in November, 2010.

Since the offer of a reward, Darwen Town Council mayor Paul Browne said he had received eight calls with information.

Yesterday afternoon he said he had received a called which included information about two people, giving their name and address, which he had passed along to the police.

Coun Browne said: “It has worked. Someone rang and gave me the details.

“I have passed the information over to the police, and hopefully now action will be taken against the culprits.

“I am delighted the offer of a reward has made this person come forward.”

A £500 reward is still on offer for information on a descrated grave at Belgrave Gardens, Darwen.

The 18th-century memorial to the Haydock family was spray painted in several colours, including the name Andy.
