WHOLESALERS, grocers and shoppers were all complaining one day in 1965, when the price of 35 products went up.

Stanley Astley, from one cash and carry in East Lancashire, said notification of the rises had arrived in the post that morning.

“Since November more than 200 manufacturers have advised us that price were going up — and sometimes these firms produced as many as 10 items,” he said.

“We employ a full-time assistant, who does nothing but continually check and alter the food prices on our lists and in the cash and carry departments in our warehouse.”

Increases announced by manufacturers that day included Crawfords shortbread, up 1d, Milk of Magnesia, up 3d and Ambrosia creamed rice, up ½d.
