THE owner of a Darwen takeaway has been told to pay almost £2,000 for three separate offences.

Qumar Akhtar, who owns Rooster Chicken and Pizza, in Borough Road, was found guilty in his absence by Blackburn magistrates of twice failing to provide information when requested, and for having no permission for a “Las Vegas-style” takeaway’s sign.

The first offence, of failing to comply with requisition form information dated September 30 served by the borough council, was committed on October 24.

Akhtar, of Nottingham Street, Blackburn, was fined £350 with £636 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

He was fined £350 for the same offence when documents, requested on November 9, hadn’t been presented by December 5.

Under law, the council required information on the ownership of the premises, occupancy and the interest of any other people in the premises.

A third offence, of displaying an advertisement with signage for the takeaway without prior consent, resulted in a fine of £525.

Coun Dave Smith said: “I’ve had loads of complaints about that takeaway. The sign is highly innappropriate for the conservation area – it’s like something out of Las Vegas, it’s so bright.”

Coun Brenda Cronshaw said: “The rules are there to be obeyed. I’m very pleased this prosecution has taken place, because it serves as a warning to other business owners that they can’t just do as they please.”

No-one from the shop was available for comment.
