AT last, common sense prevails: a transport select committee is recommend-ing that elderly drivers should have a retest.

But targeting elderly drivers alone though, surely doesn’t go far enough. Illness (alcoholism, obesity, dementia, multiple sclerosis, heart disease) and injuries (from road crashes) invariably compromise driving ability – at any age.

Doesn’t the law require a driver to notify DVLA of such conditions? Only on trust – anyone not wanting to chance losing their licence doesn’t have to.

Such drivers are not only a risk, then, but also uninsured. What chance a victim of getting compens-ation? Driver error kills all too often, seven times more each year than all the British soldiers killed in 10 years in Afghanistan. What have these brave lads died for? To make Britain safe, is it not? Why aren’t we all doing our bit?
