Accrington Stanley have completed the loan signing of Wigan Athletic's Rob Kiernan until the end of the season.

The defender joined up with his team mates this morning and could make his debut against Northampton tomorrow subject to Football League and Premier League ratification.

The 21-year-old has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at under 19 and under 21 level and has previously played on loan at Yeovil, Bradford, Wycombe and Kilmarnock.

"I can't wait," he said. "I'm looking forward to my first game tomorrow and getting going. Hopefully we can get three points and do well.

"I think the gaffer's been watching me for a while in a few reserve games and with Ireland and spoke to Roberto Martinez to see if I could come down and play a few games.

"I've been on loan a few times before so I know what's expected. It's a big step up compared to reserve football and it's so important to get three points. I know what to expect."

This is Paul Cook's second signing from Wigan after goalkeeper Lee Nicholls.

"We're grateful to Wigan for helping us out," said the boss. "We've got a large number injury problems at centre half and we're confident that Rob will do a great job for us."
