Go-ahead for Burnley home for ‘emotional teens’

CONTROVERSIAL proposals for a new home in Burnley for youngsters with emotional and psychological problems have been passed.

And planning bosses have insisted that there should be no cause for concern over Dr Saleem Khan’s development at the former Alexander Hotel.

But it has emerged that NHS East Lancashire bosses are not impressed by Dr Khan’s efforts to house 10 young patients at the Leven Street complex.

In a planning report councillors were told that, regardless of planning issues surrounding the move, the Nelson-based health trust had clinical concerns over the range of ‘interventions’ which could be offered there in a message to the planning committee.

Residents had protested about the conversion of the former hotel, which has most recently been used as an American diner and international hostel.

No fewer than six residents, living in cottages on site, face losing their homes if the centre proceeds.

Campaigners were concerned about the nature of the proposed home – which will offer a ‘protective environment’ for young residents with problems from anorexia to depression.

Coun Tony Harrison told the borough’s development control committee he had worked in such homes, for older children.

“There is always the expectation that there will be trouble and it is nearly always greater than the reality of the situation,” added Coun Harrison.

Coun Ida Carmichael said a similar venture operated near her home and it never presented any problems to the local community.

Before councillors approved the scheme, planning head Sue Belton said: “There is no reason to believe that this will cause any problems in the area.”

How will Dr Saleem Khan be paid for this work and who will pocket the proceeds? What will be the cost per person per week? Dr's tried this with nursing/residential homes for the elderly charging up to £1,000 per week for 24 hour care.
Maybe this is the next lucrative market since these emotional teens don't have many other places to turn to and are going through hard times.

This entire thing smells funny to me.

I can see it having the credibilty of the All Wales Ethnic Minority Association, which was suprisingly investigated, with all funding suspended recentely.

Whatever happens, I can't see it being a benefit to the taxpayer, but I can imagine Dr Khan is soon to be driving a rather large car and living in a just as sizable house.

Let's see how long it is before the residents of the immediate neighbourhood develope "emotional and psychological problems" and have to seek a "protective environment" as a result of this decision.

so glad there is somewhere to help these young people, just wish it wasnt private and nhs or east lancs could have offered this service but all they are getting are cuts, even the wards for mental health adults are a shambles with plans to get worse when burnley close, still treating people like they did 30 years ago if the public knew the half of it they would be appaulled hope it never happens to one of your loved ones

I can't believe this has been given the go ahead. He didn't even have a a business plan for this adventure. Upto £3000 a week per child, who have exhausted all other avenues of support and care is what he could be paid for one to one support coming from all areas of the county..... Money making scam if ever I have seen one.
