Pendle shop’s £14,000 charity bonanza

BARGAIN hunters from Barnoldswick, Earby and further afield have generated a bonanza for cancer charities.

Charity shop sales have enabled Barnoldswick and Earby Bosom Friends to hand out £14,000 to seven good causes.

Eighteen months of trading has seen the store become a popular fixture in the middle of Barnoldswick’s town square.

First it flourished in Frank Street but since November the premises have gone from strength to strength by moving to the former Pendleside Mortgages offices in Ellis Street.

Pendleside Hospice, Barnoldswick’s Park Road surgery and Earby Surgery were among the wave of beneficiaries, receiving £2,000 apiece.

Pendleside Hospice, Myeloma Research, Brain Tumour Research and the oncology ward at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital were given the same amounts.

The remaining £2,000 will support the work of the charity’s mini-bus, which takes patients from West Craven and surrounding areas to Airedale Hospital for check-ups and treatment.

Mary Brennan, Bosom Friends chairman, said: “It has all been collected through the shop because we’ve had such a good return over the past year and a half.

“We do all our own fundraising but we are not the kind of charity which likes to hang on to the money.”

The presentation of the £2,000 cheques took place during a ceremony at the Cellar Bar in Rainhall Road, Barnoldswick.
