Sewer work set to go through Blackburn's historical district

ARCHAEOLOGY experts have been put on standby as water engineers begin digging in an historic part of Blackburn.

United Utilities’ £35 million sewer scheme is moving into the Cob Wall area of the town in the next week, an area steeped in history from Blackburn’s industrial golden age in the 19th century.

Experts from NP Archaeology will be on site as water engineers begin digging.

Their job will be to spot and preserve significant artefacts, including industrial revolution era brickwork, building foundations, machinery and tools.

The engineers will work to increase the size of Blackburn’s sewer system, so that it can hold more water during rain-storms.

This will reduce the risk of sewage spilling into the River Darwen, River Blakewater and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Carly Atherton, United Utilities project manager, said: “The work in Cob Wall is especially interesting from an archaeological point of view, as this part of Blackburn was the site of many industrial revolution- era textile mills.

“The archaeologists will be working shoulder-to-shoulder with our engineers, to make sure any significant artefacts are preserved.”

Work in Cob Wall will be delivered in stages over the next two years.

The first stage will involve constructing two underground sewer chambers, one in the green space next to Harwood Gate, and one next to the local Peugeot garage.

Temporary traffic lights will be required throughout both phases of work.

This is just more wast. If the council was that intrested in history, they should nt have knocked them down in the first place?.This is nothing more than job creation for the boys. But the thing that gets me?, Is this will take extra time and cost 20% more on top of the 35 millon bill( for delays ). "mark my words"( I can see head lines now!, Work to stop No more money?.) Its all most comical to think that contractors, Still get away with this type of blackmail( weres the overun claw backs in the contract?. "stitch up by the legal profesion" ). BUT NEVER MIND ITS ONLY YOUR KIDS AN GRAN KIDS THAT LL PAY. "But that's fine". £35 millon? thay could do it for alot less, by paying "morons" with degrees less!. eg civil enginering company probably getting £12 millon. ( 50% will be profit if you can untangel the paper work. ) just for walking around with a ruler and a tape!. I know iam beeing over simplistic but some of the greatest engineering, in the world was done with not a degree in sight!. But world as suffered greatly when a person with a degree takes control.( They live in a world of self belief an worth,) "lucky yes" but not better?. (Most Arent worth spit.) So the smug control the ignorant no change there. Iam just stuck in the middle an cann't do a thing!.( if i did i they would call me a communist, or worse a terrorist!?????. ) TTFN

when at school, I often wondered about the meaning of Shakespearian solilquy..
You know, the bit where a character speaks, regardless of the presence of a listener?
Oh, I know, many can rant and rave, about all sorts of things that make no sense..
This comment is nothing more than pure, heartfelt emotion, not that anyone would care that the writer poured out his soul, in such terse terms.

If you ever think of going into politics, regardless of dogma, be assured of my vote.
Well said, Lad.. Keep it up.. & more power to your elbow.

Are you available for writing job application letters, where you mention slave wages, long hours, overbearing supervisors, tyrannical bosses living the high life on the sweat of underclasses?
And here's me thinking that Tony Capstick is dead...
I doff me cap, tug my forelock.. Sir!

I know exactly what you mean, but he is right to a degree.

There is a modern dogma in the UK where so many people get worthless arts qualifications that we MUST give them highly paid jobs, basically to get in the way of the useful people with engineering skills.

They mainly end up doing "project management", ie. shifting triangles round a sheet of paper for 35k+ a year. And then we wonder why we have to get the French to build our new aircraft carriers, or why they win a 10bn order to sell fighter planes to India ahead of us.

I agree with you out of your mind, been there and seen it many times. I had this conversation the other day " what would be the cost of building the Leeds to Liverpool canal today, and could it be done using the same equipment and manpower" I don't honestly think it would get completed.
As for the archaeology well I hear they uncovered the old tram lines went to dinner and when they came
back they could just see three lads wearing white vest tops, driving away in a flat bed tipper tranny van full of old tram track.
