AN ILLEGAL immigrant was arrested at a takeaway in Accrington.

The Pakistani national was taken away by UK Borders Agency officers last week after an intelligence-led raid.

They raided Tasty Grill in Blackburn Road, at 9.30pm on Thursday.

UKBA confirmed that the 35-year-old man had originally come to the country on a student visa.

But checks revealed his paperwork expired in September 2011.

He had not renewed his visa and was arrested as an ‘overstayer’ with no valid ground to remain in the UK.

The 35-year-old remains in custody while efforts are made to deport him.

Eddy Montgomery, Operations Director of the UK Border Agency in the North West, said: “This is the latest in a series of operations we’ve carried out to tackle immigration crime in Lancashire, and more are planned.

“We will not tolerate illegal working which undercuts wages and can exploit vulnerable workers.

“The UK Border Agency will target employers who ignore the rules and remove people who have no right to be in the UK.

“We’re happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be done on staff, but those who do break the law should know that we are out there looking for them and they will face heavy fines.”
