A YOUNG footballer with 'enormous potential' has been found hanged at his home.

Jason Powrie, 20, played as a left-sided forward for Nelson FC in the first division of the North West Counties league.

Police said Mr Powrie, who leaves a baby son, Andre, was found dead at his home, at around 1.45pm on Christmas Eve.

Paramedics were called to the house on Blundell Lane, Penwortham, by family members, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances.

As a mark of respect, the game between the Victoria Park club and Holker Old Boys from Barrow was called off on Boxing Day.

Nelson FC manager Paul Paynter said that he and his players were devastated by the death of their team mate.

He said: “Jason was a left-sided player with great speed and enormous potential.

"I told him earlier this season that with his young age and his natural athleticism he could potentially play at a much higher level.

“Several of our squad were very close to him. We’re scheduled to train tomorrow evening, so I’m going to get the lads together and talk through this terrible loss.

“Maybe they can help each other through this awful time and draw strength from each other as team mates.”

Tributes have been paid to Mr Powrie by his two older sisters on a Facebook page set up to commemorate his life.

Kerry Louise Powrie said: “ I can write this and smile because I know you are at peace, sleeping, and playing with the angels.

“You will always be in my heart, I will think about you everyday. I will remember all those fun times.

“I can smile knowing we were so similar and understood each other.

“We were close and I know we still will be in spirit. I love you with all my heart and soul.”

His other sister, Rebecca Powrie, said : “Love you more then you will ever know your my baby brother and that will never change.

“God rest your soul, words can't explain the pain I feel, but I know you are safe and at peace now.”

Abbey Payne, a sales consultant at Next, said: “Can't believe you won't be there to brighten our working days anymore.

“You always gave me hope for better things and you were there if I needed someone.

“Loved working with you, it won't be the same. Rest in peace.”

League Secretary John Deal said the game, which was due to kick off at 2pm, was postponed after the league received notice that the club had suffered a bereavement.

He said: “I’m sure all our clubs and players have the deepest sympathy for the family and friends of this young player.

“It was too late to organise a minute’s silence on Monday but arrangements could be made to observe one before our next round of matches at the weekend.”
