Lancashire Telegraph comment: Time to go Steve Kean
8:31am Monday 19th December 2011 in News
By Telegraph comment
STEP DOWN Steve Kean
TODAY the Lancashire Telegraph is calling for Steve Kean to step down as Blackburn Rovers manager.
Saturday’s humiliating home defeat to West Bromwich Albion was the last straw following a disastrous run of results stretching back months.
The club is now waist-deep in the relegation mire.
It is understood Kean’s future is already hanging by a thread and that a defeat against bottom club Bolton tomorrow would push him over the edge. So why has the Lancashire Telegraph taken the decision to call for his head today?
The reasons are simple: If Rovers do manage to pull off a positive result against Bolton, in our view, further procrastination could take place and that would be wrong because we believe the club has passed the point of no return. It is now surely clear that Kean has to go and one good result shouldn’t be enough to save him.
We are also calling for owners Venky’s to start running the club the way it deserves to be run or to put Blackburn Rovers up for sale if they are not prepared to protect its proud tradition.
A year ago last weekend, Steve Kean was appointed Rovers boss after Venky’s inexplicably sacked Sam Allardyce.
The club has been on a downward spiral ever since.
Kean’s record of just seven wins from 37 league games tells its own story and, with managers ultimately judged on results, Venky’s have to take decisive action and change the manager now.
Kean’s tenure has just been a symptom of the main problem at the football club and that problem is the inadequacy of Venky’s management.
They threw a managerial novice in at the deep end and have systematically failed to provide him with the support, investment and suitable structure, to turn their undoubted gamble into a success.
Large sections of Ewood Park once again called for Kean’s sacking after Peter Odemwingie’s late winner on Saturday and it is impossible to see how he would ever now get the crowd back on his side.
He needs to go immediately to unite Rovers fans.
But then Venky’s have to make sure they act decisively to bring in the right replacement and to give him the necessary support.
Some readers will question why it has taken the Lancashire Telegraph so long to call for a change in manager at Ewood Park.
The reasons are simple: Once appointed, Kean needed to be given time to develop the team (too often clubs descend into a downward spiral simply because of the impatience of chairmen and owners).
But it was also clear that Kean has never received the support he needed from the owners in the week by week management of the club.
Much of the present chaos at Ewood Park is down to the owners. They are the ones who have not invested the necessary funds into moving the club forward, who have not put a suitable management structure in place at Ewood Park and who have failed to communicate with supporters.
Co owners Anuradha Desai and Venkatesh and Balaji Rao have been conspicuous by their absence at Ewood Park throughout the season and they need to come to Blackburn now to start portraying their commit-ment to the club.
If they don’t believe they can now deliver on the promises they made when they bought the club, then they have to put Rovers up for sale.
We hope they can finally respond decisively and turn this mess around.

'Tis the Season of Goodwill, what a terrible and uncharitable remark to make at this time of year. I must also add that your comments/headlines have been posted without much thought. Just consider all the laughter, delight and amusement we have been privileged to watch with BRFC having the best and most ambitious manager in the Premier.
Long may you keep your job Mr. Kean. It's time we started a petition for him to stay, so come on everyone get behind and support Steve Kean.

I hear Avram Grant being mentioned maybe we should demonstrate now as the bufoons in charge may like his record of being relegated without a fight.
The only person that has a cat in hells chance of keeping us afloat is Mark Hughes but do not expect him to sign if they want him to fly to Pune every four weeks.

1) He is very wise and would only come if given assurances about funding and the structure at the club 100% sound. So can the Venkys convince him? -I doubt it on their record to date but if they could it would show they are learnng from mistakes.
.
2) He is untested as a manager and that would be a risk element (you can't take much notice of 6 games at Newcastle though when he let his heart rule his head with the state they were in). But for me he is 100% a winner and a thinker about the modern game and he would get fantastic support from Rovers fans if he did come.
.
I think more likely though would be Sparky or Benitez - and they would bring a guarantee of safety even at this point we are only 4 points off safety.

Normally I wouldn't be overly concerned. We've not been great in recent years but I've always been confident there are 3 teams worse than us in the PL, however I believe we are now one of the worst 3 teams in the league.
.
We all saw this beautiful expansive football with Dann's goal at the weekend... I think even Big Sam would have been proud of that one!
.
We are devoid of quality both on the pitch, on the bench, on the coaching staff and in the boardroom. Put all that together and nobody can be surprised we are where we are in the league.
.
It was blindingly obvious to many fans Kean was a clueless muppet when he took us from mid table safety to almost certain relegation last season, yet the LT still gave him an easy ride.
.
The biggest problem now is what manager in his right mind would come and work for the current owners? Only one who is out of work and desperate. Do we want such a manager?? I don't mean Benitez or Hughes - they wouldn't come in a million years and for one I wouldn't blame them!!

You have finally stood up for this proud football club, and are telling it how it is.
-
I was saying after the defeat to WBA that one win against Bolton should not be enough to keep Kean his job. Regardless of the result against Bolton Kean must go, and a manager who has the qualifications and experience for such a big job should be appointed.
-
We are already cut adrift at the bottom, and it is clear that the fans are now 100% against Kean staying on as manager.
-
The results speak for themselves and the manner of the losses against Sunderland and WBA show that the players have lost belief and are resigned to relegation. We were hanging on against a very Sunderland side that was there for the taking and were punished. At times against WBA we were again sitting back and accepting the loss, aside from a long ball routine which was part of Big Sam's gamaplan.
-
Under Kean I have seen a complete lack of tactical understanding which has cost us many points.
-
Under Kean I have not seen any of the players improve as players. The coaching improvements in performance are all part of the managers job.
-
Under Kean I have seen players who are clearly not up to the job played and played and costing us matches.
-
Kean should be sacked and go back to coaching. However, based on the players performances during his reign I am not even sure he is any good at this.
-
Lets just pray that the Venkys remove Kean now before the Bolton game. The Bolton game is irrelevant, as Kean has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that we are going down with him as manager this season. Even without him, in this situation it will take an amazing turnaround and investment in January to keep us up this season.
9:09am Mon 19 Dec 11
Morst The 88th Min Heartbreaker of Dingles! says...
.
Venkys need to approach the recruitment in a professional manner though or they will be snubbed by quality managers. They have to have a sound business plan, convince the manager about future investment and let him run the football side - not agents!!

You have not done either and have compounded your betrayal of our club by staying loyal to a low cost manager who is destroying the fabric of the club.
In my opinion, Kean should have been fired after he lied to the police in his drunk driving case, then we might not be in this position.
However, this is your one opportunity to fulfil your promise to The Walker Trust ( to keep Jack's legacy) and to embrace the fans.
Sack Kean, appoint Hughes, Souness or at a push Shearer and Newell, and get a proper management structure sorted out including a Chairman we can respect, not some slimy agent-appointed weasel.
One chance Venkys, one chance. I genuinely hope you stick to your promises when you took over the club because what you have done so far has been dishonourable and immoral to the thousands of Rovers fans and their families who have probably had the most miserable 12 months of our lives.
We love you Rovers

Instead the LET has dutifully regurgitated Venkys and Kean's PR puff and hidden behind "supporting" the team.
As part of the Rovers' revival the LET should play its part and get some decent journalistic standards and do its duty to the town and the sub-region.
The fans on this board have been way ahead of the LET in serious investigation and genuine concern but the LET doesn't take any notice. This board is seen as a PR exercise by the LET, too.

To leave SK in charge on Tues night would be (yet) another mistake by Venkys, why ?
1 - Because the atmosphere at the game will be terrible if he's there.
2 - Conversely if he's gone the gloom will be lifted and there is a much better chance of the crowd roaring on the team to a much needed victory.
3 - If he's still there and we win (and win convincingly) they then put themselves in a difficult position on Wed morning - having to sack a manager that may have just got a 3 or 4 nil win - and although unlikely (we are only playing Bolton) its not impossible.
Therefore only a fool would leave his sacking until after the game - oh sorry, I forgot, we're owned by Venkys - so he WILL be inplace for tomorrow nights game.
How stupid are these Indians and are they NEVER going to learn ??

The Independent reported at the weekend that Venky’s have appointed Israeli super agent Pini Zahavi as their adviser.
I have read somewhere that Zahavi is an associate of Anderson. He comes across as a charmer in the murky world of take-overs and transfers.
A power-broker...multi
-million £ agent's fees...third party ownership...Yakubu transfer...Gaydamak at Portsmouth...Abramov
ich and Chelsea...the West Ham and the Tevez-Mascherano affair...Rio Ferdinand...Alan Hansen...business dealings a labyrinth...and so it goes on...
He says 90% of managers in England are close friends - and the next generation are even closer...
One person is quoted as saying: "People don't know who the real Pini Zahavi really is"...
He has been the subject of an enquiry into football corruption...
The Guardian ran a story on 'investing' in transfers - a huge growth area. "Investors target profit from football's talented youth" was the headline...
It may well be that our club is now caught up in this sinister world of power-brokers from which there is now no escape.
Are clubs and players simply the vehicle for his money-making activities? It may explain some of the incoming players at Ewood. Talented youth?...Mmmmm...
But here, with supreme irony, might be some good news. He is an associate of Kia Joorabchian (of Tevez fame), who, I believe, now represents Mark Hughes.....
Google 'Pini Zahavi' - it makes interesting reading

It is, however, Kean who is under the most pressure, with Blackburn supporters and now the local newspaper calling for his head.
Kean told Sky Sports News HD: "I spoke with the owners for about 45 minutes yesterday (Sunday).
"We had a real good conversation, mentioning again the health of some of the players because we have got a few that are falling at the moment.
"We will look forward to the transfer window opening and see if we can get a few bodies in that can hit the ground running straight away and make an impact."
Asked if the owners had issued a win-or-bust ultimatum ahead of the Bolton game, Kean added: "No, not at all."
The Scot is fully aware that he needs to turn things around at Ewood Park and has called on the supporters who continue to question his reign to get behind the team on Tuesday.
When asked if he had a message for the disgruntled fans, he said: "Stick with us. With a game that is as important as this, stick with us. When we scored (in a 2-1 defeat by West Brom on Saturday), I felt the momentum swung in that game and they were with us then.
"Obviously when you get a late goal against you it's disappointing, we were all disappointed. But if they could stick with us for this game, I think it could make a massive difference.
"I'm not trying to pretend that I don't understand the magnitude of this game. I'm not enjoying where we are in the table.
"But when I look at the players and I get out on the training ground and they are giving a response, they are certainly behind what we are trying to do. That gives you a massive boost
YOU COULDNT MAKE IT UP

There is very little evidance of this at all ?
If you saw Kean in his press conference today - he look fresh and relaxed - not like someone who knew their time was up.
We all know that his position is completely UNTENNABLE but unfortunately non of us own the club.
We are ultimately owned by a middle aged woman from the ar$e-end of no-where in India who has said from day one that she knows nothing and cares even less about football.
She doesnt care what Rovers fans think.
She dosent care about the terrible atmosphere at home games.
She dosent understand that her "golden boy" simply isnt up to the task.
She dosent understand that the way she is running the club is disasterous
She dosent care that we need finances in January for player purchases.
She dosent care that the local or much of the national media say he has to go.
She dosent understand the implications of relegation.
And no doubt, she dosent understand at all the IMPORTANCE of having a good manager at a football club.
All she cares about is NOT putting a single penny into BRFC and (at very least) getting out worldwide exposure for her corporate name.
So, given all these factors -why should or why would she EVER sack Steve Kean ???????

For Kean himself because he is a dead man walking now and is ridiculed not just in Blackburn but from Lands End to John O Groats with the exception of one small enclave full of inbreds which is his only chance of sanctuary!
.
Total and unbelievable abuse will de directed at him on Tuesday which would be a great distraction in a must win game.
.
Instead put Admiral Nelsen in charge which will unite everyone into beating Bolton which is key for the next manager. Then bring in a quality manager (with a CV this time) and support him in January and we could have a very good chance to survive.

If Venkys sack their creature, who would step into his shoes ? because the notion that Venkys have drawn the right conclusions and will now be "good" owners is fanciful. The Rovers are a small part of Venkys overall activities, Venkys are still in hock to agents and Venkys have worries about banks here and possible prosecution in India.
Kean will do their bidding, in a weird way, he's still their best option, for if Rovers collapse, financially and footie-wise, they'll need a loyal stooge to run the fire sale in January.
"New Dawn" ? Don't count on it.
I can see us loosing to Bolton or drawing and Kean being kept on. A win would be disastrous because then there's an excuse - you can see the headline now "We've turned the corner" says jubilant Kean.
My money has been on Venkys selling up and clearing off for some while now and Kean is the man to do that for them.
Any other option involves money, commitment and a huge apology - pulling the plug is the most acceptable solution for the Spivs.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

If they sack Kean now and appoint a new manager straight away it's going to be a baptism of fire. There's no magic wand to turn things around. The best a new manager can do is to motivate and instil self belief. Is this enough to go to Anfield or Old Trafford and get something? Probably not. The worst case is that we get leathered and the players/fans etc get down in the mouth and the new regime gets off on the wrong foot.
Sack him after the two games (effectively write them off) and immediately sign a new manager may give the new regime half a chance of getting off to a winning start and then carrying forward momentum.
Another alternative is sack him now to appease the fans, get anyone to take charge temporarily (I'm sure a shaved monkey could do a better job) and then get the new regime in place for the New Years fixtures.
I think that this needs careful consideration, because strategically this is the last throw of the dice!!

Emerton, Diouf, Andrews, Jones, both of them. and trying to rely on cheaper imports with little or no PL experience, Rochina, Formica, Petrovic, Hoilett, Dunn and pedersen.
Big mistake making us weak in the middle.
More big mistakes, last year it was pretty obvious to everyone we needed full backs, a couple of decent hard working full backs would have made the world of difference, Kean and Venky's signed ribeiro and Myles fracking anderson. Meaning we had to play Givet at fullback and Iggy pops swiftcover puppet who is as slow as mi dad on the other side.
Seb larsson fiasco where he was available for 1 million and Rovers offered 600,000 and then deciding to wait until he was a free agent.
Letting Kalanic go who was our highest scorer even though the bald headed twonk wouldn't play him, instead opting to give banjo spanker Roberts a contract extension when Big sam didn't even give him a squad number. So we replaced Kalanic with Yakoobu who although has been an amazing signing puts in as much as hoilett does in defence. Why couldn't we have kept Kalanic and had the yak as well. Goodwillie, the less said the better, another cheapskate option.
All of the above says cheapskates to me, always taking the cheaper option or signing a promising player that we could make money on= cheapskates.
The fans don't help our cause any, although at this stage it is quite understandable, as how they have been treated by Kean and Venky's is very poorly, ewood was like a morgue on Saturday. They have been good to us in a monetary sense as they have given us some good deals on tickets, but who wants to watch a shower of sheite. Communication has been awful.
The fans booing after we just took the lead against swansea was the lowest of the low, don't care who it was aimed at it was just plain wrong.
Not sticking up for diouf when sewer rat warnock opened his hole, not stamping out the boo boys for Andrews when now he is our best midfielder, I bet all them who booed him wishes he was back here, the reason why Villa, Bolton,Swansea, Ipswich and others want him is beacuase our brain dead thick fracker fans don't know a good hard working player when they see one.
Why did you let Emerton go when he had another 12 months on his contract, Stupidity.
Kean out, the bald headed twonk has made poor decision after poor decision and they all add up to cheapskate relegation.

The LET finally wakes up after sitting on the fence for so long, though having woken up a good article.
A win against Bolton should make no difference whatsoever, he must go asap and even then the chances are its too late.
A few have very worryingly mentioned of Avram Grant. I consider him on a par with Kean. Shearer too inexperienced.
Hughes would be great but would love Lambert to come. Whoever it might be we cannot escape the fact that the owners need to invest in players heavily in January and the evidence so far (lack of transfer spend, cashcall from Bank) suggests this will not happen.
I struggle to believe Venky's misguided actions to date are down to naivety and our only hope of a bright Premier future is with different owners. Afraid Qatar Petroleum really is a Christmas present too far to ask for but we can hope.
I shall continue to log on daily with fingers crossed but until it really happens still do not believe they will sack "their" man.

At the moment it is like being on the Titanic watching the horror show unfold before ones eyes - please tell me it is a nightmare and I will wake up and all will be well
As for a new Manager discipline organisation and motivation is what is needed supported by a Chief Executive based at Ewood. Hughes or Souness. The one positive thing about Venkys is that they have not interfered with the Manager in team affairs.

should our beloved leader get dumped (please god) then this is my summary of the runners and riders in no particular order.
just my opinion....i have no doubt others would disagree.
Benitez – really? Falls out with owners at the drop of a hat both at Valencia and Liverpool. Anybody think that would be any different at Rovers
Solskjaer – looks good on his results in Norway, slightly different in premiership (or championship). Comes across really well and is well versed having worked as coach at United for a few years. I would have him. Very ambitious. Bryan Kidd?
Shearer – little or no experience at managing or coaching….why would it work? Bobby Charllton, Nobby Styles etc.
Lambert – why on earth would he leave Norwich where he is building a successful side and with a stable club, well run – just like Rovers used to be by John Williams and co.
Hiddink/Ancelotti – behave!
Poyet – ambitious manager plays the game the right way and a bit of a media luvvie. You would want him in your tent pi$$ing out, rather than outside the tent pi$$ing in.
Hill – massive leap to premiership. Success at Rochdale, very early at Barnsley
Adkins – Saints look certain to come up. Got momentum. Would he swap a promoted club for a relegated one?
Grayson – bet he hates working for Bates. Rovers heritage, lives local – good frontman. I’d have him. We could offer him more money and a way out of Leeds bearpit. I’d have him
Reid – Dinosaur
Souness – might be a short term solution til end of season. Firefighter. Save us from relegation on big bonus
Hughes – obviously attractive option and fans’ favourite – would he entertain coming back with tweedle dee and tweedle dum in charge as well as big sister….can’t see it. Kia Joorabchim?? And you think Anderson is bad news
Grant – a gripless void. Is he any better than what we have got?
Laudrup – interesting option and has been mentioned in connection with Rovers before. Think he has left Mallorca. Could be interested. Good pedigree across several countries. Worth a dabble?
Bruce – out of work, bet he wants a job. Hates domineering/interfer
ing owners. Bessie mates with Allardyce. Possible, but doesn’t pop your socks.
Coyle – could be available on Tuesday. I’d have him on a short-term contract. Lives local.
Curbishley – you have to think that he is damaged goods. There must be some reason why he hasn’t got a job in years.
McLaren – damaged goods after Forest, will end up back abroad, where he hasn’t got the bad blood.
Walter Smith – wise old head, retired from managing in Scotland, might fancy another do in England. Available and no doubt quite cheap.
Sven – please God, no
Dave Jones – type of option that Venkys might go for. Underrated. Available. Hardly likely to sate the supporters appetite – but could do OK, which is a lot better than the solids we are currently swimming in.
Roy Keane – desperate to get back into management. Can anybody see him having a good working relationship with our owners? Light blue touch paper, stand well clear. Never return to an unlit firework, it may go off in your face.
Burley – anther Scottish old soak who would keep Bargain Booze in business.
Clark – doing good stuff at Huddersfield, but as Ince can testify, it’s a big jump.
Holloway – would be my favourite. Live at the bottom of my lane and drinks in my local. Lovely bloke. Fans’ favourite. Desperate to get back in top division. Great motivator and would probably be tactically less gung-ho second time around. Would he want to join the Venkys circus?...would have thought not. But money talks – he is never gonna get a big budget at donkey lashersl (but could say same at Rovers).

Fraid that not many of your favourites would be high on my list Hass, especially Holloway, a very nice chap indeed but really over-rated as a manager even if he one of your neighbours. Ole Gunnar isn't really proven - anymore than Hill is though the both may make the grade in higher leagues.

Michael Laudrup is someone who I mentioned months ago and would be a really interesting name in the hat -
The most sucessful manager in Getafe's history, he then managed Mallorca when they were rock bottom and bankrupt and saved them from relegation and quit on priciple earlier this season with them in mid table after his number 2 was sacked by the chairman behind his back.
He is a true footballing worldsuperstar, has SUCESSFULLY managed much smaller clubs in Spain than Rovers, probably has never earned as a manager what SK is currently being paid so wages probably wouldnt be a problem.
Downside is, he has never managed the premiership so would be a risk but an interesting risk in my view and Venkys have yet to sack SK so this is probably all irrelevant anyway cos I'm not convinced they're EVER gonna get rid of the muppet !

Just taking a back seat for a bit is the only way to stop it wrecking my head, They are just destroying it before my very eye's, It heart breaking.
We have gone from a club who did not have a lot of money to play with, But a solid man in JW who knew what he was doing ,To these people who just do not have a clue at all.
.
I think they will asset strip players in January to balance the books.
If the drunk driver is still in charge by then Rovers will be done for , And it would be very hard for us to get back to the Premiership(No Jack Walker, RIP) this time to bank roll us.
.
A merry christmas to both of you and your family's and any other Rovers fans out there.....

Think you should look in the mirror LET, most of the stories are written with little or no truth and are pure speculation at best !!!!!!!!
Front page Headlines should be about sacking the Government or breaking the local trend and reporting honestly about Local Issues in the Community, and stop being PC !!! Because if you are breaking the Law, then you should be punished equally, and not dependant or Creed, Colour or Religion !!!
Maybe, the people who bury their heads in the sand, might one day wake up and see the real world most of us have to live in day after day.
Racism is now the most abused word in the English Language, yet the LET only ever have "selective" journalism on this subject, and like all other sources of Media, they "HAVE TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT" !!!!!
Its not about race, creed or colour its about RESPECT, and some elements of Society have NO Respect for anything or anything or anyone !!!!
And this includes this Story about a man doing a job and you are running Headlines to get the guy Sacked !!!!
Disgraceful Journalism !!!!!!!!!!
ps Heard through the old grapevine, he can't be Sacked because of, lets say "off-the field activities" ?????
pps And to the above comments about a Team playing against 9 men and only beating them 1-0, 3 points is 3 points which ever way they come !!!And after watching the highlights of the the West Brom Game, yes West Brom did score 2 top class goals but I think the Player's have to shoulder a massive responsibility for the manner of the defeat, gutless and "can't be bothered, I am going to collect MY big fat pay cheque at the end of the month" attiude, is killing the Game!!!
And the real culprit's are the player's, if they have no heart, desire or willingness to EARN their pay cheque, then no matter what mr kean says will make a bllind bit of difference !!!
But I don't see the LET Headlining the rightful blame at the Player's door any time soon!!!!!

Clearly he is now holding the club to ransom and will not leave till he gets a large slice of Jack Walker's financial legacy...just like his chum Jerome Anderson has managed to achieve in agent's fees....how much was it again last season?? £6M?? Make no mistake...Kean and Anderson are scum and need hounding out of the place....Jack Walker deserves and would expect no less. In fact....we all know that Jack would never have sold his beloved Rovers to the Indians in the first place!! Shame on the Walker Trust for that!

Blackburn owners Venky's must listen to the people and show manager Steve Kean the door.
Kicking my heels before a delayed Kenny Dalglish press conference at Ewood Park in 1994, I got talking to the groundsman. He asked which paper I was from. “The Telegraph,’’ I smiled. Shaking his head, he said: “Never seen you before.’’
“The Daily Telegraph,’’ I explained helpfully. “There’s only one Telegraph,’’ he harrumphed, and returned to his forking. The Lancashire Evening Telegraph rules in these parts.
That is why the paper’s decision to demand Steve Kean’s sacking as Blackburn Rovers manager is so significant.
Local papers value and nurture their relationship with the club at the heart of their community, almost considering them partnerships, and they rarely weigh in with such heavy criticism as Monday’s broadside.
The paper may not be as influential in the Ewood boardroom as during Jack Walker’s day but it still reflects the supporters’ mood.
It sensed their anger towards Kean and acted. Only a foolish board, and the Venky’s have yet to reveal they possess much wisdom, would ignore the call.

Unfortunately for all those clear-eyed people who can see that the only way forward for Rovers is without Kean, Venky’s have shown little appreciation of the calamitous state of affairs engulfing this famous old club. Dressing-room spirit drains away by the match day.
Even the captain, Christopher Samba, a tireless servant, admits their belief is shredded.
The Christmas truce between Kean and dissenting fans must have been the shortest on record: 52 minutes.
When James Morrison struck that sumptuous volley for West Bromwich albion on Saturday, Ewood’s thinly-held restraint dissolved and the derision flowed for Kean again.
Rovers fans are rebels with a cause, a passionate one, a legitimate one, and Venky’s had better listen on Tuesday night.
For those supporters advancing nervously along icy pavements into Ewood, or sliding down that muddy back hill, Tuesday evening’s “Battle For 19th Place” with Owen Coyle’s similarly beleaguered Bolton Wanderers poses serious questions.
Do they back the players, knowing that victory in the Infirm Derby might reprieve the unpopular Kean? He would certainly attend Wednesday's board meeting in more bullish mood, claiming he can turn the season around.
Nonsense. The die is cast. The Lancashire Telegraph is right.
Even if the board still retains some faith in a lame-duck manager, the total breakdown in relations between dug-out and stands means that the manager is already dead man walking.
The people have spoken on Kean, loudly, endlessly, even turning up with a banner at a Rovers match in India to take their campaign to Venky’s backyard. That relationship is fractured beyond repair, regardless of what happens tonight. It’s over.
It’s not personal. Rovers followers simply believe the inexperienced Kean is out of his depth.
Such is their antipathy that some Blackburn fans have even started attending games at Victoria Park, home of Chorley FC, managed by a former Blackburn favourite in Garry Flitcroft. So Venky’s must choose between their fans or their manager.
Blackburn stand at a crossroads. Kean has led them down a cul-de-sac and new direction is required. Alternatives present themselves.
Rovers fans would warmly welcome a return for Mark Hughes and his well-respected back-room team.
Alan Shearer, whose goals drove Dalglish’s Rovers to the 1995 title, is also a possibility, although he would need an experienced, badged-up No 2.
But, seriously, if Avram Grant is the answer, as suggested in some misguided quarters, then the question must be truly terrifying.
Blackburn fans deserve better. It is not as if Kean can fall back on a development in playing style; Scott Dann’s goal against West Brom was as direct as anything produced under Kean’s predecessor, Sam Allardyce.
As he plots West Ham’s promotion push, Allardyce could pass one, even two of his former clubs dropping disconsolately into the Championship.
Bolton enjoyed good times under Allardyce but now stare into the abyss. Raised voices on the Reebok terraces increasingly wonder why Coyle receives less criticism than Bolton’s appalling run arguably deserves.
The extraordinary collapse since that catastrophic FA Cup semi-final defeat to Stoke City last season would usually demand greater scrutiny.
Coyle has largely escaped the media’s wrath partly because he is likeable company, as the fans suspect, but more importantly because he boasts a back catalogue of managerial work that commands respect and some degree of patience.
Coyle took Burnley up, then kept Bolton up and guided them to that Cup semi. For a while, Coyle was hailed as the latest bright young Scottish-born manager, lauded for enhancing the careers of two loanees, Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge.
He deserves a few months’ grace. Does Kean? Coyle’s fellow Glaswegian simply does not own the sort of impressive CV that offers much protection.
It is to be hoped that the Premier League monitors closely the situation at both clubs.
These are famous sites on the English footballing landscape, clubs dating back to Victorian times. Bolton were formed in 1874 (as Christ Church FC) followed a year later by Blackburn.
Tuesday night embodies much that is good about the game, namely the enduring passion of the fans, and so much that is bad. One shudders to think what will happen if either club are dragged down.
Bolton have a capable, conscientious chairman in Phil Gartside but are £110 million in debt.
Gartside argues that the money owed is to their owner, Eddie Davies, and “we have no dangerous levels of bank debt” but it still relies on Davies’ continued largesse.
Blackburn are simply a mess, a club lacking in leadership from the boardroom to the manager’s office.
The alarm bells should have rung in the Premier League’s Gloucester Place HQ the moment such respected administrators as John Williams and Tom Finn left Ewood. Clubs are crying out for executives of their calibre. So for Blackburn to dispense with their services indicated a club losing its mind and soul.
The Premier League can argue that the law of the jungle applies, that all clubs face challenges, particularly in an era of the perfect storm of high player wages and stretched fans’ salaries, yet events at Ewood are embarrassing to the image of English football.
What is happening at Blackburn is an affront to the club’s traditions, to Walker’s memory.
If matters don’t improve, if Kean isn’t sacked, if the fans’ concerns aren’t heard, then the local paper will soon be calling for Venky’s to go.
Tuesday night promises to be high on emotion, anxiety and stakes. Fear stalks both clubs

If the article started by telling the Venkys to put up or get out, and start by giving Kean a decent payoff with an acknowledgment that they hadn't done right by him and allowed him to take flak that should properly have been directed at them, that might have been an honourable stance to take but, to demand that Kean should be sacked in the hope that something might change, is shabby and lowest common denominator journalism.

We are intelligent enough to realise that Steve Kean is just a symptom of inept ownership, however he is THEIR appointment. It is the "Special K" one who has been feeding the Chicken Pluckers with his rhetoric, so 1st and foremost he needs to go. He is well and truly out of his depth and is responsible.
Then if and when we can find new owners, it is time for Venky's to leave town - that is if all the conspiracy theories turn out to be true.

Kean may be a good coach but he is not up to the job. The Board grabbed Venky's cash - or the promise of it - without really thinking because it's obvious that they have no idea about running a Premiership club.
That said, last night's protests during the game were totally out of order. Before the game, at half-time and after the final whistle - that's when they should have chanted but during the game those protesters should have been 100% behind the players. Instead, they put themselves first on the pretext of being '100% Rovers'. How the team played as they did with all that moronic chanting is beyond me. Get a grip and get behind the team when they're actually on the pitch!
