THE next multi-million pound phase to get the area’s schools up to scratch has been announced.

Lancashire County Council has approved a £14.2million scheme that will overhaul some buildings and make them energy efficient.

Under the scheme, an additional 24 East Lancashire primary and secondary schools will receive more than a third of the overall funding for the county.

A total of £5,153,704 has been allocated to schools including Burnley Heasandford Primary School, Haslingden High School, Hollins Technology College and Sabden Primary School.

The approved works will include replacement boilers, roofs, rewiring and removing asbestos.

The schools involved are set to receive between £10,000 to over a £1m each.

Hollins Technology College in Accrington is earmarked to be given a £1,050,000 investment. This includes an investigation into the school building’s condition which has been earmarked as a ‘priority’.

The next largest sum of £800,000 has been set aside for Haslingden High School following recommendations from a surveyor.

Many of the high schools involved in this programme were due to be transformed under the county council’s Building Schools for the Future, BSF, scheme which was axed by the coalition government.

Earlier this year Lancashire County Council approved more than £10million for the first phase of works under the capital repair programme. The total repair scheme has almost reached £25million.

The council has pledged there will be minimal disruption to children’s education while the works are carried out.

The report said: “Although disruption to normal daily school activities will be kept to a minimum, the nature and extent of some proposed repairs may be such that it would be impractical or unsafe to undertake work unless the school is able to make the affected areas of the premises available.

“Consequently, in order to maximise spending, it is proposed to undertake high priority repairs only where schools are able to practically and safely accommodate the work in year.”

The schools set to be redeveloped are: Accrington Peel Park Primary School, Clitheroe Pendle Primary School, Oswaldtwistle West End Primary School, Great Harwood Primary School, Hyndburn Park Primary School, Moor End Primary School, Rhyddings Business And Enterprise School.

Alder Grange Technology School, Bacup Sharneyford Primary School, Burnley Brunshaw Primary School, Briercliffe Primary School, Colne Park Primary School, Colne Primet High School, Hendon Brook Primary School, Ightenhill Primary School, Burnley, Nelson Lomeshaye Junior School, Reedley Primary School, Trawden Forest Primary School, West Street Primary Schiool, Whitworth High School.
