A councillor has urged residents to fight plans to shut Colne’s household waste recycling centre.

The Regent Street site in Colne is one of three in East Lancashire facing closure as part of cost-cutting measures.

The others are at Great Harwood and Bacup.

But Pendle councillor Ann Kerrigan has slammed the county hall plans and is putting together a petition to try to save the centre.

She said: “I would like all residents of the Colne area to ensure that they respond to this consultation.

“It is incredibly important that we keep the site in Colne. The impact on Pendle Council’s wagons alone will be immense.

“Just imagine the implications of increased mileage to use the recycling site at Burnley.

“Petrol and diesel are at premium rates and the extra cost will have to be met by local tax payers.

“If the council tax doesn’t increase, then there will surely have to be a cut elsewhere to pay for this.

“This is on top of the costs that will be incurred by we residents having to travel into another bor-ough to get rid of our waste.”

In a report on the future of recycling centres, the county council said people in Colne could travel the extra distance to Burnley’s new centre in Heasandford.

But its figures revealed that 64 per cent of households in Pendle were closest to the Colne centre, with only 17 per cent closer to Heasandford.
