WORK is set to begin on a crime-busting lighting initiative in Burnley after the scheme beat off competition from nearly 40 rivals countywide.
Ageing lamp standards in the Lyndhurst Road area have been a cause for concern among borough and county councillors for nearly four years.
And now £38,000 has been handed over to revamp installations along the road, from the county council’s community lighting scheme.
Out of 38 bids, for funding totalling £100,000, only the Burnley scheme produced an adequate rate of return, according to county council highways cabinet member Coun Tim Ashton.
The only other East Lancashire projects in the top 20 were for the Richmond Road junction in Accrington, from Moorhouse Avenue to Pendleton Avenue, and Springhill Road, from Fairfield Street to Moscow Mill Street.
Small schemes for Coniston Close in Longridge and Broad Lane, Whalley, were also turned down.
