ACCRINGTON’S newly refurbished market has been voted Britain’s best indoor market in a national competition.

The market hall was awarded the accolade at the 2011 National Association of British Market Authorities, Market of the Year Competition.

It comes after a £2million refurbishment of the Grade II listed building.

Coun Marlene Haworth, cabinet member for markets, said: “I am absolutely thrilled and delighted for Accrington Market Hall to receive this top award.

“The market hall now looks fabulous with the refurbishment and it’s also a great shopping experience.”

Graham Wilson, chief executive of NABMA, said: “This year there was a record number of entries with almost 70 markets entering and the standard of entries was the highest ever in the competition.”

It looks pretty good after the refurb, the shops and cafes are good, it's a nice small town market. It's lacking the atmosphere of larger markets where there are more stalls selling basic essentials and people come from miles around every Tuesday or Friday and the place is really bustling. But those are disappearing, replaced by foreign-owned supermarkets. Town councils have sold out to the supermarkets when they could have invested in improving and retaining the traditions that make small towns so worth visiting.

Yes it looks good after its refurb, but come on get real. The days of markets, street or permanent have gone, so I will give Accrington and indeed a few others about another ten years.

You do spout some rubbish! I've just read your comments on "Top chef backs bid to better ‘food economy’ in East Lancashire" - which are equally negative. All I will say is that Fleetwood Market is very busy and there is a waiting list from stallholders; and over 250,000 people every week visit Bury Market. There are bustling markets all over the UK. Enough said.
