A BUSY town centre street will become one-way to allow buses to travel more freely.
Council chiefs have spent months planning and making the changes to Penny Street, Blackburn.
It means that drivers will now only be able to drive northbound up the road, from the junction with Salford towards Barbara Castle Way.
Instead, a bus lane will replace the southbound stretch and traffic trying to turn off Barbara Castle Way or Larkhill will be diverted towards the Eanam roundabout.
The move, which is part of an overhaul of Blackburn, was blasted as ‘another nail in the coffin’ of the town centre.
But town hall bosses said it would benefit trade and traffic flow.
Sir Bill Taylor, who chairs Blackburn with Darwen’s council and health care organisation, said: “The improvements at Larkhill and Barbara Castle Way are yet another piece in the jigsaw aimed at promoting public transport, making the town centre less congested with traffic and improving access to the Orbital Route.”
The changes to Penny Street will take effect from January 31.
And highway alterations have also been made to an area near Blackburn College to help bus access in Cardwell Place, King Street and Barton Street.

I think this has been put in place for the proposed arrival of a Sainsbury's supermarket and covered bus station which will be located at Blackburn Market. It will take shoppers in a car forever and a day to get to Sainsbury's in that case!

maybe if you had been on a bus recently you would stop trying to force people onto them, they smell, thet are a rip off, they don't take you where you want to go so u have to get to a stop that goes where you want first and to top it off you always likely to get some lovely person sat next to you or even better pay the ridiculous prices then have to stand. Maybe it't time to stop shopping in blackburn and support Manchester or Preston

I never go into Blackburn. Never seen such a mickey mouse road system in all my life....bloody shambles. Never see many people on buses anyway...it is cars that bring people into towns. I couldnt afford to travel by bus.

I've followed "Sir" Bill Taylor's career with increasing increduility and I'm sure I am not alone in wondering why he is not only a Knight of the realm, but actually still in paid employment. Every scheme to try and bring some kind of "improvement" to the cess-pit of despair called Blackburn seems to involve him - and seems to fail miserably. He is living proof that inadequacy, incompetency, lack of ability and a massive ego are THE attributes to bring success in the never-never land of the public sector. I agree with one of the other correspondents who think that what the council are really trying to do is close Blackburn to everyone with any kind of ambition and drive and have it as an enclave for layabouts, immigrants, benefit-breeders and vermin. My wife and I go to Clitheroe, Preston, St. Annes - anywhere in fact, rather than the most scruffy and depressing and motorist-unfriendly town I have ever visited - Blackburn.

hahaha! one way system, isnt the new way forward years ago, when they said the roads were improved by the kaos near asda and B+Q, it was the worst decision ever, and now a complete one way system, you are going to see less and less people in blackburn.... the travel congestion on match days will be dangerous! youle get lots of angry drivers, never mind buses, there cutting more and more services every week,
lol. must laugh at the morrisons comment, morrisons would never move, been there to long, and make way to much money to leave, yes the plans for sainsburys to be opened is in place, but it looks highly unlikely as dangerous driver conditions there, there site is to small, and wouldnt work, the sainsbury sight is to move, were the new super tesco is thought to have fallen through at whitebirk!
