LANCASHIRE students are planning another round of demonstrations today ahead of tomorrow’s vote for the proposed tuition fees rises.

National Union of Students members at Blackburn College’s University Centre and the University of Central Lancashire in Preston are planning peaceful protests, the day before MPs are due to vote.

Sam Cudworth, 20, NUS communications officer for Blackburn College’s University Centre, said hundreds of students would walk out of Blackburn College campus at 11am before a march through the town.

And he said they were anticipating an even bigger turnout than last month’s rally.

The union's representatives at the University of Central Lancashire, which has a campus in Burnley, will be holding a protest in Preston flag market.

Burnley-based students are expected to travel over to the city for the rally.

Students and lecturers across the country have pledged to keep up pressure on MPs to vote against the plans following a wave of demonstrations last month.

Law student Sam, from Great Harwood, said: “It is now or never.

“A lot of people, especially sixth formers, are passionate about it because it may affect them.

“But everyone knows a student in this day and age and the vote could affect them in the future.

“We feel it is possible to gain cross-political support on the basis that the vote is being rushed through, as well as our disagreements with the policy itself.”

The proposals are to scrap the current fees cap of £3,290 and allow universities to charge students up to £9,000 a year.
