A PLAN aimed at breathing new life into Rawtenstall is being drawn up by a team of top architects.
Rossendale Borough Council has commissioned BDP’s Liverpool Studio, a regeneration body, to spearhead a study looking at ways to transform Rawtenstall town centre.
The aim is to redevelop the area with improved rail and bus links and create a thriving market town.
Coun Tony Swain, leader of the council, said the Valley Centre would be the 'number one priority' of the project, which has received a £50,000 boost from the North West Development Agency.
He said: “I have been very impressed with BDP. They have already spoken to traders and have been to our town centre regeneration meetings.
“We are also looking at plans for a new bus station and improving rail links.
"Whatever happens, our number one priority is the Valley Centre.”
The council is looking at using compulsory purchase order (CPO) powers to take over the site.
Council Swain said a meeting with owner Ashcap Properties had been set up for next month and that the last remaining tenants, the Post Office, were in talks to find alternative premises.
Andrew Teage, head of BDP’s Liverpool Studio, was involved in the Liverpool One shopping development.
He said: “Rawtenstall town centre needs a long-term planning solution which will help to regenerate the town centre, supporting the thriving independent high street shops, improving transport links and attracting new investment into the town.”

No doubt we'll have Labourshite Councillor Alyson Barnes criticising this move in public but supporting it privately. Wonder when she'll come up with anything constructive herself rather than making statements like here we go again........... I'll not hold my breath, though I'm sure she, and many others, would like me to. If the economy hadn't been wrecked over the last few years I'm sure things would be different.
