CRIME in Lancashire is down to its lowest level since 1973.
Police have revealed the county’s annual figures, which show 10,000 fewer victims of crime than this time last year.
Statistics for domestic burglary and vehicle crime are now comparable to 37 years ago.
Lancashire is consistently in the top ten performing forces for detection rates, with more than a third of criminals being caught.
Chief Constable Steve Finnigan said: “What these figures show is that, although many things have changed out of all recognition since the 1970s, crime in Lancashire is at historically low levels.
“It is really encouraging that fewer people are now becoming victims of crime and that our grip on offenders is tightening.
“Despite these positive figures, we are not complacent and we remain committed to keeping our communities safe from harm.”
Chief Superintendent Bob Eastwood said: “This is fantastic news for people living in Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley and clearly demonstrates our commitment to ensure our communities continue to be safe places to live, work and visit.
“Fewer crimes mean fewer victims which is one of our key aims.
"Becoming a victim of crime causes great distress, so we are delighted to see the number reduced.
“We know that, for some people, the perception of crime is far greater than the actual levels of crime and I hope the figures reassure people that they are safer now than they were in the 1970s.”
There were some crime increases however, with Eastern division seeing a 24.9% rise in drug crimes from 759 last year to 948 this year.
There was also an increase in sexual crimes, up from 192 for 08/09 to 299 for 09/10.
Police said the drugs offences increase was down to enforcement activity and sexual offences due to work done around encouraging victims to come forward.

Isn't the selling of hard drugs a crime? People with no visable means of support driving around in expensive motors not being investigated? Blatant flouting of our alcohol licensing laws? Unlicensed vehicles with no insurance? Red diesel in taxi's? Tax evasion and fiddling the system going on without investigation? Illegal immigrants? Unprovoked assaults and no arrests? OR.................. .. Is it because many criminals are in nick and the rest like rats only appear at night when our police are depleted?. Lots of people don't bother to report minor crimes after hearing of promises of counselling and the old Bill turning up hours after an incident has been reported.

Yeah, the 1970's was full of chavs, and old people did not dare leave there home. Another example of the Government manipulating the statistics so they can feed the public more bull****!!!! Does anyone actually believe this????
