BAXENDEN’S famous pie makers are creating new Coronation Street-themed treats as part of the soap’s 50th anniversary.
Holland’s Pies will make special savoury goodies such as ‘Betty’s Hotpot’ to be sold in supermarkets after they were named as one of the ‘Best of British’ brands being used to celebrate 50 years of Coronation Street.
Corrie-branded food, such as ‘Steak and Coronation Street Ale pie’ is Holland’s contribution to the celebrations, which will also see Coronation Street goods sold by brewers JW Lees, Warburtons bakers, Imperial Leather soap, Typhoo tea and furniture store and 'Coronation Street' broadcast sponsor, Harveys.
JW Lees has already partnered with the show in the past launching a 'Coronation Street' draught cask ale in April 2009.
The firm, along with Holland’s, were invited to take part in the anniversary of the UK’s longest running drama, after naming them the country’s ‘Best of British’ brands.
The Baxenden pie company said its links to Corrie went way back. Archive footage shows Ken Barlow’s ‘Uncle Albert’, Albert Tatlock tucking into a Holland’s Pie on the popular soap more than 25 years ago.
David Rowlands, marketing manager of Holland’s Pies, reckons Hollands and Corrie are made for each other. He said: “Both are steeped in tradition, North West to the core and loved by millions. We’ve been looking through the archives and seen Albert Tatlock tucking into one of our pies.
“We’d like to think that today’s characters on the best loved street in Britain would be like anyone else on any other street in the region and devoted fans of Holland’s.”
ITV say Holland's was were selected because it is the North West’s best-loved supplier of pies and puds. The Coronation Street-themed pies from Holland's will go on sale for £2.49 and will use Coronation Street 50th Anniversary promotional artwork and branding on the packaging.
