Bishop of Blackburn speaks out on Zimbabwe in Easter Sermon

THE BISHOP of Blackburn will use his Easter Sunday sermon to highlight the persecution of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe.

The Right Rev Nicholas Reade will also urge the congregation to vote at the forthcoming general election.

He gives his Easter sermon at Blackburn Cathedral tomorrow morning, where he will lead the congregation out of the cathedral onto the forecourt in an attempt to demonstrate support for the 'heartbreaking' plight of Anglicans in Zimbabwe under president Robert Mugabe, who is a Roman Catholic.

It will mirror services in London, where worshippers will gather outside the Zimbabwean embassy.

Anglicans have faced violence in recent months following the removal by the church of Nolbert Kunonga, a Mugabe supporter, as Bishop of Harare.

Canon Chris Chivers, of Blackburn Cathedral, is a close friend of his successor, Chad Gandiya, and attended his consecration in July when he was locked of out Harare Cathedral by Kunonga.

Canon Chivers said: “The situation has got worse recently. There have been public beatings outside churches. They will leave one church alone for a few weeks then go and beat up the parishioners in another one.

“We thought we would hold a congregation outside the cathedral in solidarity.”

Tomorrow Bishop Nicholas will say: “To see and hear of their joyful faith in the Jesus who broke out of the tomb and broke through closed doors, and then learn that some of them cannot worship the Risen Christ in their churches because they have been locked out of them is heartbreaking.

“In, for example, the Diocese of Harare the faithful have been threatened with tear gas and by the police, but their faith in the power and love of the Risen Christ will not stop them from turning up and worshipping outside their churches and the cathedral.”

Zimbabwean Christians had even invited their President, whose orders barred them from attending church, to join them in one of their outside services, the Bishop will say, adding: “We will stand in solidarity with them as we go outside as a congregation and pray that justice will do for them and peace brought to the Church."

Bishop Nicholas, who recently took a seat in the House of Lords, will tell people to 'apply their Christian beliefs among the jostling agendas the politicians present'.

The Rt Rev Reade's reflections on Zimbabwe during this time is a noble and welcome gesture. The Anglican Church in Zimbabwe, with special reference to the Diocese of Zimbabwe is a scandal of our time. Readers need to be informed that the Province of Central Africa perhaps erred by letting this whole development out of control. Certainly there must be legal instruments in the Church to deal with such cases. Now the whole thing seems to be about Mugabe and the Anglican Church. The Roman Catholic Church is indirectly implicated. This appears to be like missing the point. The is a political dimension to this no doubt but we need to know what it is in for politicians such as President Mugabe to take an active role. Having been privy to some of the developments that led to this degeneration from 2005 onwards, I feel that Church people are not honouring their commitment to the truth and that is what complicates matters. I hope Bishop Reade will focus on the truth that many are missing out on. The Anglican Church is not a political mouth-piece of any organisation that has vested interest in Zimbabwe. Even if Kunonga would like to hide behind political ideals to justify his case, the world need to know that he is a desperate man who went so far as hiring thugs to stel Church property. I do not think there is any seasoned politician who could sink so low by supporting such madness. It is quite encouraging that our plight as Anglicans in Zimbabwe is being taken seriously even during Easter. Thank Bishop Reade

We went through the run up to the Iraq war talking about 'regime change' was needed. Meanwhile Mugabe was allowed to carry on doing what he does best ....annihilate the country and its people. The UN should surely do something about this. Is there any oil in Zimbabwe ???

Good point Akki. This country has a proven track record with doing business with dictators, murderers and nasty bits of work. Why? Because there is money in it. Principles and 'right and wrong' fly out of the window when PROFIT is involved.

If Mugabe is the the 'devil incarnate' then why has the Roman Catholic church not excommunicated him long ago!

Or does the Pope now cover for despots as well as child abusers.

We should stop meddling in other countries affairs. Zimbabwe isn't the only country run by a madman... there are so many others in the world that are ruled by crazy nutters that rule ruthlessly and are murderous tyrants. So are we going to take out all the others as well ? Why is Zimbabe so special that it deserves attention ? It's just that we have a colonial history regarding it.. so what ? Why should that make it a special case. There are millions of people opressed throughout the world because of their tyranical leaders - why not mention them ? Why dont they deserve the world's attention ? Burma, Sudan, Tibet, Tajikistan etc etc.. where do we stop ? Why should Zimbabwe be a special case for due attention ?

As for regime change....we can see what a total scr*w up Iraq was.

There is enough cr*p at home to sort out, before getting outselves worked up about tyrants elsewhere.

Why should anyone be told anything by a Bishop ? With or without a £365.00 a day seat in the Lords Gravy House ?

What use is a Bishop to People?
