A BOY had a lucky escape after he plunged through the roof on an empty building.

Fire chiefs today warned of the dangers of youngsters playing on derelict sites following the incident which happened at the old Air Cadets building, Clayton Street, Nelson.

Crews were called to the boarded up building at 8pm yesterday after the 10-year-old plunged 10ft through a plastic skylight when it gave way under his weight.

The boy, who lives in nearby Stanley Street, hit his leg on a table during the fall.

He was given oxygen at the scene and taken to Burnley General Hospital as a precaution.

Crew manager Tom Ashworth of Nelson Fire Station said: "He was very fortunate if he had have hit his leg against the table he could have easily have lost his life.

"Empty and derelict buildings are very dangerous places and children should not play there."
