PUPILS hope to strike gold in a treasure map competition. The challenge to design a chart was thrown out to Year 7 pupils in the run-up to a children's book fair at Hollins High School, Accrington.

The week-long fair started yesterday and the school library has been decorated with murals and maps to reflect a Treasure Island theme.

Fair organiser Sue Heffernan said: "The idea behind the fair is to get pupils interested in books, encourage reading and improve literacy."

The fair will be open from 8.30am to 4pm each day, catering for pupils between the ages of 11 and 16.

There will be a choice of more than 300 titles on display from leading publishers.
