PRESTON North End are top of the league according to fans who had their say in a club survey.

But the results have been tainted by a shock announcement from manager Gary Peters.

He said he would quit the team if the fans wanted him to after players were booed in the 2-1 win against Wycombe last Saturday.

But an early morning meeting with club chairman Bryan Gray on Monday (February 17) led to a change of heart.

Mr Gray said: "Gary phoned me and said there was a definite feeling against him among the fans and said that if it was in the best interests of the club he would resign.

"I told him it wasn't because I think he's doing a good job. It's important that he not only has my support but that of the fans as well."

The shock statement came at the same time that the results of 1,400 questionnaires showed PNE had scored some encouraging results.

The results included:

73 per cent of respondents thought that stewarding was good.

More than three quarters said the club does listen to fans views.

PNE's Marketing Manager Nigel Webb said: "The information will help us to improve all the services we provide for our fans. It gives us information on the things we are getting right and where we could do better."
