A FRIGHTENED Bury boy being chased by a dog was injured when he ran out into the path of a car to escape the animal.

Waqas Mahmood (11), of East Street, Bury, cut his head and leg in the collision but thankfully escaped serious injury.

The accident happened near his home at the junction of Spring Street-Lord Street on Tuesday, February 11, after the Holy Trinity C of E primary school pupil had gone to a local shop.

Now his concerned father Tariq, who tragically lost a six-year-old son in a road accident six years ago, wants police to talk to the owner of the dog, a one year-old mongrel called Troy.

"This dog belongs to a family in East Street. But it regularly chases children and women," claimed Mr Mahmood..

"My son had just come out the shop in Spring Street when the dog began to chase after Waqas. He was afraid it was going to bite him."

Waqas was in collision with a Vauxhall Cavalier car driven by Julie Benson (23), of Porterscale Close, Bury. He was allowed home after hospital treatment.

Local residents say an ambulance which arrived in East Street to treat the boy was forced to reverse back down the length of the road because access to the Spring Street-Lord Street area is permanently blocked off.

Mr Mahmood added: "My son is frightened of dogs and I'm just relieved he wasn't more seriously hurt. I've asked the police if they can have a word with the person who has the dog."

Troy's owner, Dianne Thompson said: "He was being taken for a walk by my eleven year-old daughter Debbie when boys fired toy guns at Troy and threw things at him.

"They were also calling his name. He's a very playful dog and reacted by pulling on the leash and running towards them. At no time was Troy off his lead."
