THE cycle speedway youngsters of Astley & Tyldesley turned in a terrific performance in the British Indoor Team Championships at Dudley.

Final score: Heckmondwike 56, Wednesfield 33, Bury 33, A & T 31.

Scorers: Lee Smethills 10, Luke Mather 9, Mick Hack 9, Martin Phillips 2, James Mann 1.

They took advantage in a second chance, British U16s champ Smethills winning the last race to knock Bury into third spot.

Final score: Stockport A 53, A & T 46, Bury 45.

Scorers: Smethills 13, Hack 12, Mather 11, Phillips 10.

A & T's squad (with the exception of Hack) was the youngest in the tournament, and this told on them in the quarter final.

Final score: Norwich 54, Tameside 49, Leicester B 35, A & T 20.

Scorers: Smethills 5, Phillips 4, Mather 4, Hack 4, Mann 3.

The North confirmed its domination of indoor cycle speedway when Stockport won the final ahead of Leicester, Heckmondwike and Tameside.
