A MOVE to ban the use of PVC in car production which would have threatened hundreds of Lancashire jobs has been blocked.

A European Union directive aimed to stop PVC being used on environmental grounds but the proposals threatened jobs at Wardle Storeys in Earby, which employs 370 people.

"These Green Party amendments would have done a lot of harm to Lancashire industry as no adequate alternative to PVC has been developed," said Euro MP Mark Hendrick. "It would have been ludicrous to put so many people out of work and at the same time not have a replacement material available."

Modern cars are sprayed with PVC produced by firms including Wardle Storeys before painting, to help stop them rusting.

The End of Life Vehicles Directorate is aimed at preventing environmental problems from obsolete vehicles piled up in scrapyards by making components recyclable.
