I HAVE just read the article, "Angry Dad in crossing plea" (July 30).

I lived on Hillock estate, Whitefield, in Douglas Close, from 1966 to 1972. Our rear garden backed onto Mersey Drive, near to the Lord Clive pub.

I therefore know about the traffic problems. My brother was knocked down on Mersey Drive by a truck which was overtaking school buses with children alighting and parents around. This was in 1967 and he was very fortunate to survive.

I remember the traffic flow even then being fairly heavy. We attended Mersey Drive Primary School and I honestly don't recall a crossing attendant, either before or after school.

And so I find it amazing that, after 33 years, there is still no zebra crossing or other means of controlling the traffic flow on Mersey Drive.

I live in Perth, Western Australia, now. Near to schools here there are speed humps, zebra crossings, cross-walk attendants, and speed limits which restrict drivers in the area to 25-30 mph between 7.30am and 9am and 2.30pm and 4pm. Police and radar traps are used if motorists refuse to comply.

Come on Bury councillors, you have done nothing to correct a problem which has been there for 33 years. Mr Tomlinson is right, the issue has been falling on deaf ears for more than three decades and it should have been long since rectified.
