MORE than 1,900 tonnes of newspapers and magazines have been recycled in South Ribble in the past year.

The council has thanked all participants in the 'blue bag' kerbside collection scheme who recycled so much material that collection rounds had to be altered to cope with the demand.

All homes in the region should now have a calendar to inform residents of their new collection day.

To complement the blue bag scheme, the council also replaced existing paper banks with blue banks, to encourage recycling.

A spokesman for South Borough Council said: "New homes in the borough are now included in the rounds and we are hoping to recycle at least 2,000 tonnes of newsprint next year."

Anyone interested in taking part in the blue bag scheme should call (01772) 625625 for details.
