A BUSINESSMAN has released letters of support for his controversial scheme to create a £6million leisure park and woodland on a green belt site in Burnley.

Andrew Brown's plans for the 100-acre site at Crow Wood House Farm are being strongly opposed by Friends of the Earth and Civic Trust campaigners and will be the subject of a full public inquiry ordered by the Secretary of State for the Environment who will make the final decision on whether to grant the go-ahead.

Burnley council planning chiefs and the town's MP Peter Pike say they are in favour of the development.

And now Mr Brown has issued four letters sent to him by individuals, backing the project.

He says there is overwhelming support throughout the town, adding: "I have received no negative comments from any source."

Friends of the Earth say opposition is widespread throughout the town, but have yet to provide evidence from opponents of the proposal.

The date for the local inquiry has still to be fixed.
