SNOOKER star John Parrott made an appearance to congratulate the University of Central Lancashire for the success in potting a £2,000 award.

He is pictured with John Greer, head of students services, and Chris Sconce, business development manager, who helped secure the NHS North West Health Challenge Award.

The awards are staged by the NHS in the North West to highlight and reward organisations whose innovative projects are helping people to better health.

The university won the main award in the Schools and Colleges Category, the first time this award has been won by a higher education authority.

The health-promoting university has laid down policies to promote the health of the campus community.

Judges were particularly impressed with the 'safer sex door hanger' scheme which displays advice on safe sex and contraception.

Other schemes include the Touch project, which involves students going in to clubs to offer health information in settings which are relaxed and familiar to students.

Runshaw College took the £1,000 Runner Up Award in the Schools and Colleges Category with a scheme which teaches road safety to learner and newly qualified student drivers.
