AN Atherton green group has welcomed news that the semi-derelict Victoria Mill is to be revamped.

Chairman of the voluntary Atherton Environmental Projects, Derek Bullock, is delighted that the Bolton Road factory site has a brighter future.

Now the group is calling on the Post Office to reinstate the original Victorian post box that was located in the mill wall until a couple of years ago.

"It is a unique part of the town's heritage," he said.

Derek said: "We have long suggested that this mill should be saved for the benefit of the town, rather than being demolished as many people wanted.

"Former Atherton councillor Jack Sumner deserved credit for helping us to promote its refurbishment with Wigan Council's Resource Procurement Team."

In a visit to the site in November 1997 the team's leader, Peter Rowlinson, along with Derek discussed the potential for saving the mill, as well as reclaiming the former mill pond for community use, opening up a more pleasant view from the adjacent Bolton Road - all of which will now hopefully happen.

Derek said: "With Atherton Environmental Projects interest with others in upgrading the adjoining Valley now well underway, this former neglected area of Atherton has a sunnier future."
