AS MY wife and myself are both blind we receive your publication on tape as part of the Talking Newspaper service.

There has recently been much discussion concerning the problem of dog dirt fouling the Promenade, this is also a big problem in the many residential areas close to the prom.

My wife and I live in just such an area and regularly attend a centre for the blind near our home.

When walking we have encountered just this problem and due to our disability are usually unaware that we have stepped in anything until we have trodden it into our home and carpets.

I don't know whether this is due to irresponsible owners failing to clean up or strays wandering the streets, but surely the council could help by washing the streets more frequently in the early hours when few people are about?).

May I remind your many readers aware of the numerous hazards encountered daily by the blind and partially sighted. Advertising boards in the middle of pavements are easily tripped over, cars parked half on the pavement. Hedges and trees which overhang paths cause cuts and scratches, discarded rubbish causes many a fall.

My wife and I are often pushed and jostled despite having our white sticks. Thanks for the opportunity to get on my soapbox about these issues which may seem inconsequential and trivial to most but can mean the difference between a safe and comfortable walk and a possible trip to the casualty department (no pun intended) for a blind or partially sighted person.
